Residents were startled by the sound of a large wall collapsing in Ryde earlier tonight (Thursday).
The wall, situated on Castle Street, is said to have looked precarious for sometime.
It finally gave way shortly before 20:45.
Police are currently in attendance at the scene in the interests of safety. They have closed the road.
Arrangements have been made for the debris to be cleared from the carriageway, which is currently blocking the road between George Street and Dover Street.

I just can’t believe it
Seems a bit of a wall story to me.
It could of hurt someone
that wall was showing signs of pressure behind it for years.
In the night garden escapes, iggle piggle found wandering along ryde sea front
Apparently, all the bricks became offended at each other due to the lack of social distancing between them. The normally solid cohesion between the brick community of castle street gave way and they all rushed out on to the road, to protest at not being allowed to social distance.
police were called as one or two bricks had become a bit violent and aggressive and were threatening to throw humans at each other.
Who is accountable for this? Someone could have been killed by their negligence. Allways the same story; ignorant individuals who couldn’t care less getting away with not taking responsibility. I’m betting the council was aware and didn’t force anyone to deal with it.
Whilst I can concur with the premise of your comment that someone who owns this wall should have taken steps to ensure it’s integrity, to say the Council should have enforced repairs/maintenance is a bit rich…
they can’t even ensure walls that they are responsible for are maintained in a safe condition. Osborne steps is a classic example, walls are bulging and shifting – stones have come out of the wall and what has been done? Someone came along and picked up a few loose stones and stuffed them into a carrier bag and NOTHING else done!!
I walk along that road with my five year old. What would I be doing today if it had fallen on her? I certainly wouldn’t be laughing.
So don’t walk your daughter under bulging walls. And if you pass this way regularly then who did you report it too and how often?
Don’t be a twat
With a child (or more) to look after she will have had more on her mind than checking out walls.
Zoe’s absolutely right, that would have been a very heavy weight on a small child – or frail adult.
Once a good wall, now off road parking in an highly sought after area. Beats planning applications…..
