A block of 5 apartments may be built on an Isle of Wight town centre site currently attracting anti-social behaviour.
Ian and Carol Hudson have applied for planning permission to construct a building with 3x two-bedroom flats and a further 2x 1-bedroom units on brownfield land behind 13 Union Street in Ryde.
Proposals, which also include landscaping, serve to meet some of the identified need for additional houses across the Island, a statement from Craig Soutar Architecture and Phil Salmon Planning said.
“The site currently attracts anti-social behaviour given its relatively secluded position.
“A narrow pedestrian link from Union Street has been used by unlawful drug-takers, which can be a constant menace to local residents.
“The apartment block is proposed to be a 3-storey structure designed in a traditional architectural style, thus being sympathetic and in context with what is presently existing in the area.”
Public transport links for residents as well as connections and footpaths to local facilities were also cited in the document.
County Hall’s public consultation on application 26/00274/FUL is live until 1st May and a decision has been scheduled for 25th May.

Sadly Numpties will be Numpties
Once a Numpty always a Numpty
The area only became a problem when the much used walk way from Union Road to Union St was barricaded up.
Then the ” undesirables” moved in as not being disturbed.
If this was the applicants intentions to ease the planning permission, it’s probably worked well.
The very narrow Union Rd has double yellow lines it’s entire length on both sides. As does the section of Castle St it joins to at the northern end.
Is there provision for at least one parking space to be provided on site per flat?
Nice to see higher rather than wider builds.
