A secure dog walking and training facility could be coming to an Isle of Wight village… although neighbours are not so keen.
Plans have been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council to turn a former agricultural field in Newchurch into a dog paradise, by applicant Jenny Ware.
Known as Maddie’s Meadow, the land at West Meath Nursery on Winford Road, could become a safe space people can rent by the hour, so dogs can enjoy some freedom.
No permanent development would take place, allowing the field to be used as agricultural in the future if required, but fencing would be put up and a mobile field shelter installed. In planning documents, Ms Ware says the easily accessible field set in the rural countryside would be a valuable addition to the dog walking community.
It will also be used for secure exercise and training for dogs that cannot ordinarily be let off the lead as well as obedience and behaviour training.
The site would be open from 08:00 to 18:00 in the summer and 08:00 to 17:00 in the winter.
Ms Ware says it would bring no more noise to the area than footpath. Some Newchurch residents are not in favour of the plans and have submitted 7 objections so far.
One said it would take away the privacy and peace from their house with another raising traffic concerns about the additional vehicle movements it would generate.
Another said the facility would generate ‘significant noise’ from dogs and owners, causing a disruption and nuisance, and said there are plenty of dog walking options in and around the village.
You can view the application, 23/01050/FUL, on the Isle of Wight Council’s planning portal. Comments can be submitted until 28th July.

What a good idea, i hope its a successful venture
It’s a fantastic idea
I hope it gets the go-ahead
An excellent idea. Owners can exercise their dogs in a safe, secure place.
Would these people prefer houses or an industrial estate built there that would cause noise and parking, some people moan about anything I hope it gets the go ahead it’s a brilliant idea
Do the people that say it is a good idea realise that this backs onto peoples properties. Dogs barking , whistles blowing, people shouting commands at their dogs., vehicles coming and going. I think you would object if it was in your backyard..
Many people have a new housing estate behind them, cars in and out all the time, noise etc, at least with this the hours of restricted
Come on, we know how this pans out!. First a dog walking field, followed by erection of a temporary building, then planning for a permanent building, and finally planning for houses.
Agricultural land should be kept that way.
