The former home of renowned Isle of Wight marine equipment company Spinlock could be transformed into a 5-bedroom family home under new plans submitted to the Isle of Wight Council.
BCM Wilson Hill has asked County Hall for a change of use of 41 Birmingham Road in Cowes – currently a redundant office building – to residential use.
The application also proposes a series of external changes, including a sky lounge and balcony replacement, alongside the relocation of the building’s Birmingham Road entrance.
According to the planning statement, the property was previously used by Spinlock for its administrative operations before the company relocated to the opposite side of Birmingham Road, moving into the converted former police station.
The planning statement says:
“Spinlock vacated the premises and relocated to the adjacent side of Birmingham Road and into the converted police station. Since relocation, the former owner placed no. 41 on the market for a significant period before the current owner purchased it in August 2024.
“The setting of the property is one dominated by the marine-related environment; split between domestic and commercial boating/sailing. This creates a pleasurable and active environment which is symbolic of Cowes and its heritage.
“The proposal clearly does not erode that context but enhances the visual appearance by upgrading the building and removing unsympathetic materials and unifying the Art-Deco appearance.”
The Isle of Wight Council’s public consultation on the proposal (ref. 25/01439/FUL) is open until 7th November, with a decision expected by 1st December.
