Already-installed illuminated signage at the front of a new fried chicken takeaway in Newport has been refused consent due to its ‘unsympathetic and harmful’ impact on the town centre.
County Hall rejected Mr T. Pirapagaran’s proposed illuminated advertising, which is already in place at Sam’s Chicken on Upper St James’ Street.
Sam’s Chicken opened at the end of August and replaced vacant retail space, previously home to the Island Photo Centre, that closed in September 2022.
The council decision report for application 25/01450/ADV cited a failure to conserve or enhance the Newport Conservation Area.
It said:
“Both the fascia and projecting sign have already been installed and have been constructed from metal with vinyl wording and logos applied to the surface retrospectively, giving the signs a modern, reflective appearance.
“In addition, the projecting sign has been connected to a fixed bracket rather than hanging from a wrought iron backet which is the preferred method for a conservation area.
“Officers note that shop frontages within the immediate area tend to be very traditional in appearance with adverts painted onto the timber fascias as opposed to more modern facies being applied retrospectively, constructed from metal or plastic.”
The report concluded the choice of materials, design and fixing of the signage was not considered appropriate for the location.
An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson this afternoon said:
“Any potential action will be considered in line with our approved Planning Enforcement Strategy which can be viewed on the council website.
“Notwithstanding that this was a retrospective application, the applicant also has the opportunity to submit a revised planning application incorporating revisions to the design of the signage to address the reason for refusal.”

With all the sh@T going on in the world who cares about a sign
It’s hardly offensive or dangerous.
If the Council spent more time concentrating on motorists
speeding that would be much better.
So many numpties speeding erratically on the Military Road
this afternoon and no camera in sight!
Roll on devolution we need speed cameras.
Imbecile! Only you can take a rational discussion about high street signage and make it about motorists. Why do you hate transport so much? Every time you post anything you go down this deranged route about speeding motorists. At least try and stick to the discussion subject.
I love transport, especially transport with rules.
On the island there are little rules if any.
Did you not read recently about a motorist
leaving the scene of an accident, not to mention
a 20 year old drink driver crashing their Skoda.
If the island installed decent CCTV islandwide
and installed speed cameras islandwide roads would
be safer for everyone.
I personally don’t care about a sign being on a shop
front.
If the island authorities were more concerned about
road safety than shop signs it would be better for
everyone.
The island needs a Mayor like Sadiq Khan
20mph is plenty.
Needs a mayor like one of the most hated men in the country, are you joking, the last thing we need is a greedy selfish little erk over here.
Then once again I must point out… this story is about a shop sign… are you being deliberately obtuse or were you just in the lower streams of education. AND Khan, I was right you are just imbecilic.
And yet nobody drives to the 20mph limit in London. There are no cameras. There are no penalties. All it does is lull the unwary pedestrian new to that borough to believe the low speed limit. They often have to run for their lives
They probaby werent speeding, they were overtaking you because you were probably driving like a pillock at 20 mph
its a 60 mph road der!
now wind your neck in and get a greenhouse or take up knitting, your comments are just boring now.
Exactly Ohlins, this guy has said in the past he thinks 20mph is right everywhere, and that speed cameras are the answer. Speed cameras don’t work, they don’t catch DUI offences, or car defects. By default they can only catch people with already legally registered cars, meaning someone speeding because they are criminals go unaffected. And like I already said, what did speeding even have to do with shop signage! This guy is an idiot.
20mph saves lives, another numpty.
Bless
Still missing the point I see. You can call me a numpty all you want. The story is about a sign over a shop. Were you home schooled by single cell organisms perhaps? There are shadows on dark nights with more depth than you. If you ever want to get out of the playgroup and debate with the grown ups do feel free to put your petty single dimensional arguments to one side and discuss topics as though you weren’t bottle fed on mummy’s special night-night juice.
I was sticking to the National speed limit
such a shame so many island Numpties
Don’t
May be any Numpty who took their driving test
on the island should go to Pompey and take
a real test that educates motorists the highway code.
Absolutely nothing detrimental about it. Suits the environment it’s in, not intrusive, materials suitable. It’s bullying for the sake of it by pathetic little men.
Looks like the Island Council haven’t had enough cash offered in envelopes yet. Or, in their minds, is it just better to have all the empty commercial properties remain vacant. Parking charges keep going up in the high streets for retail customers, whilst commercial rates keep going up for the shop owners. Unless you are a wealthy national brand, able to pay for infrastructure changes to out of town areas to placate the council, you have no hope of being able to afford the required “permits or planning needs. Yet the same council do not see it is their actions that are killing the very town centres they are pretending to be protecting.
The New World Order is to wrap up small businesses
Exactly, council is riddled with CORRUPTION and brown envelopes especially in care sector.
Nothing wrong with this sign. It looks fairly low key to me.
I cannot see anything wrong with the signage.
I’d like to see the local authority supporting local businesses where they can not making it more difficult.
Very well said. More support, less strife.
The Sam’s sign is remarkably similar to the Domino’s Pizza sign diagonally opposite. I take it that Domino’s got approval?
