The team behind the Pennyfeathers development on the outskirts of Ryde have submitted a planning application to the Isle of Wight Council seeking permission to make significant improvements to Westridge Cross.
Under the proposals, land from 155 & 158 Marlborough Road would be used to facilitate changes to the busy crossroads including the introduction of 2 lanes of traffic from Great Preston Road. Both properties were purchased by developers in recent years as part of the wider scheme in the area.
Plans show that the junction will be expanded to allow additional and wider lanes, as well as the building of a new footway for pedestrians.
Originally, Westridge Garage was to relocate further along Brading Road allowing additional improvements at Westridge Junction. Howeve, planning permission was refused by the Council and it is understood the garage has now stood down from the scheme, although the door remains open for them to return in the future.

It’s been almost 5 years since the Pennyfeathers development on land at Prestwood Grange was given outline planning permission, but work is yet to begin.
Outline permission has been granted for a maximum of 904 residential units, a school, community centre, commercial buildings, the relocation of Westridge Garage, a community energy centre, sports building and changing rooms, structural landscaping, play areas and associated highway improvements.
Last month an application was submitted to adjust the planning conditions enforced by the Council to help speed up the submission of a Reserved Matters application, which is expected to go in within the next few weeks.
Changes to Westridge Junction will also benefit nearby schemes such as West Acre Park and the expansion of Nicholson Road industrial estate.

Disgusting building like this. That valley over small brook is beautiful, and all the wildlife which has been there forever will all be bull dozed and burnt, the animals homes, food supply will be destroyed, not for a while but forever. BAD enough if it was really really needed for islanders, but many places will be full of them troublesome types who aren’t even british let alone from our island
The developers KNEW planniing would be given otherwise they wouldn’t have bought them properties to knock down to make the road wider. This stinks of pre arranged corruption from the Council and developer, neither of whom will live anywhere near the ruination they happily create, and both, rich enough from this destruction not to care.
Me and bert saddened by this used to take are old dog bess out down angles copse years ago, jas used to play in the river too.
Mary, what true words you speak. This is not normal building as it is needed for Island people, this is mass destruction and greed of developers likely the council being well thanked for getting this through. Lives for Island people will be ruined for ever now. As these homes soon fill, then more of our beautiful Island will fall under concrete, tarmac, more cars, pollution, less jobs now, and more crime than you can imagine.
As you say disgusting decision but that is what happens when those developing such know the right people.
I used to live near there. The countryside is beautiful, so many trees, and owls, and wildlife. All going to be destroyed for what? Likely for more drug dealers and benefit claimants from inner cities to out breed the whole site within a decade, then the council will just build further down the area. Crime will sky rocket, the promised public ‘improvements’ will never be built, more social housing will be built as private homes will be too unaffordable in the economic downturn to come, and unemployment, anti social behaviour will shoot up to unseen levels.
Hope the developers and planning department have ill fortune from this wicked decision for the rest of their money grasping days.
Lets all be honest, this ‘development’ is wanted and needed as much as a whole in the head, in fact a hole in the head would be a better option. Take you pennies and feather off, the lot of you.
Can’t see a separate lane for McDonalds, which surely must be part of the new road design. An extra 1,500 households and 2000-3000 more cars looking to access the only sizeable supermarket in Ryde and the oh so popular fast food drive-thru. Can’t wait.
More housing for the benefit lot to pedal there drugs!!
Greed, Greed, Greed most of the houses will be out of the price range of the workers.
If it goes ahead remember when the next local elections come round so we can remove this rubbish in charge
WE DON’T WANT THESE 904 DWELLINGS. They will be filled with troublesome scum from the mainland. Crime will be rife. The council will be rubbing their hands with joy from all the money they will get from mainland councils for taking the families who have been moved on many times because they are so anti social, nobody wants them. Bloody IOW council don’t give a fig about this island, destroying the countryside, the pollution from all the extra vehicles, the extra work our Police force will have because with these large estates comes crime and of course the residents who will be living near by. Our road infrastructure will suffer, we only have one hospital…..This has CORRUPTION all over it. Let the councillors who passed these plans live there – I DON’T THINK SO!!!
The Island has become a Dumping Ground for troublesome undesirables. They have got to have somewhere to Doss Down and do their Drug Deals from.
House building on the Isle of Wight should be banned. If they need more housing, do something about the plethora of holiday homes which remain empty for the greater part of the year.
Are the developers going to pay for it?
