A pedestrian has suffered a head injury after being hit by a bicycle whilst crossing the road in Wootton High Street this evening (Saturday).
The local female walked out into the road after collecting a Chinese takeaway and was struck by a professional racing-style bicycle shortly before 18:45.
Island Echo understands the cyclist called out, but it was too late, with the handle bars hitting the woman, knocking her to the floor.
The incident has occurred between the pedestrian crossing and the junction with New Road on the main Newport to Ryde Road.
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are on scene and are treating the casualty for a head injury sustained when she hit the ice-cold ground.
She is to be taken to St Mary’s Hospital for further assessment and treatment, but her injuries are not deemed to be life threatening.
The cyclist is also being checked over.
Traffic is heavy in both directions but the road remains open under police control, with free flow in both directions to resume shortly.

Poor girl, losing her Chinese like that
Idiot comment
Actually, I thought it was quite a humorous comment. It is exactly what sort of thing i would say to myself and perhaps even the poor woman who’s probably sat in her hospital realising that she never got to eat the Chinese. But then idiots hate…
Idiots be hating
It’s just a standard road bike. Accidents happen. It pays to look before you wander into the road.
Just a standard road bike?? It said he was wearing the full suit so obviously not those old bikes that you bought your kid to use. like where is your zeal? You assume that she didn’t look? A racing bike hurdling down that road is harr to hear but then again someone half glassesd wouldn’t be very empathetic? Lest I be judged and all that…
First time commenting so still getting used to controls, I think I even misstated my email so do apologise for the slight error in what the cyclist was wearing but I submit that if he had a racing styled bike he’s ready for tour de France so perhaps my comment still withstands.
I went on but I appears that comment was not woke material. I find fault in your thinking, it’s always the pedestrians getting blamed but it behooves drivers and riders to be doubly aware of their capability of killing a human…
Wow how sanctimonious, Its comments like these “accidents happen, oh well should of looked” puts drivers who does care for the fact that they are driving a 10 tonne vehicle that has a capability of killing even at 20mph. I know it was a cyclist on pedestrian accident which comes close to happening every day on cycle paths but its your attitude and the culture that’s breeding. drivers always blame pedestrians, rendering themselves spotless except it behooves you to be doubly careful because you can get from a to b much faster so there’s NO EXCUSE. Pedestrians stand your ground.. well maybe move first..
Yes, even cyclots could do likewise.
Should have used the pedestrian crossing!!!!
2 crossings in 50 yards and they still don’t use hhem…..
Because a racer on a bike would have the time and sense to stop.
Out the way CYCLE LANE
Should gave opened the fortune cookie before she left. May have given her a hint she would have missed the football, not enjoyed her supper and ended up with an injured bonce. Never mind, hope she is fine.
More furious cyclists will be along soon
Totally unacceptable we must ban pedestrians for the safety of cyclists.
Hope pedestrians makes speedy recovery.Think it’s about time we had a culling day for cyclists such vermin on our roads.
We all wish the pedestrian a speedy recovery, … the ‘vermin’ comment is just nasty.
Oh dear. This person was obviously so keen to get home to get stuck into her takeaway, she forgot the Greencross Code rules!
Ouch, must have hurt. Wishing her a speedy recovery and next time, Stop, Look, Listen.
Why is everyone missing the point here, it was not the young girls fault. pushbikes should be made to use the
CYCLE Paths, the Council has spent thousands resurfacing them.
Cyclists = no road tax ,no insurance, no road sense, get them all off our roads.
People are not missing the point… the point being that all road users, yes, including pedestrians, need to look out for all other road users. The Green Cross code, largely ignored these days…. and NO, as a cyclist (and driver) I will not get off your roads.
There are lots of pedestrians on cycle paths you know. So don’t really know what your point is.
No one pays road tax. We all pay for the roads through tax and council tax. Vehicle excise duty goes straight into the government coffers.
“struck by a professional racing-style bicycle” .
That says it all in one sentence. Cyclist probably too busy looking at his FitBit trying to get 2 seconds off his best time to worry about road conditions and pedestrians.
it’s simply a road bike, the term ‘professional racing-style bicycle’ is just odd!
speeding cyclist time trial i bet.
idle speculation.
What no bell on the bike ? ! How’s the Chinese?. Lol seriously use the crossings that’s what there’re for ! .
Verbal warning and very bright LED light should have been enough to see/hear cyclist !!!
How was the Chinese?
I blame the Audi driver
I think it’s terrible.
All of you are quick to judge cyclists for not looking, or pedestrians for not paying attention, I invite you to consider that it behooves us to be doubly cautious and more aware of the fact that we are operating a machine that gets us from a to b quicker than a cyclist, much quicker than a pedestrian, so if you’ve recently hit a cyclist or pedestrian with you’re 10 tonne vehicle or in this case, a handle bar, you have failed in your duty to be a responsible driver, cyclist. It’s always the pedestrians and never the drivers.. stop abdicating your responsibility as a person operating machinery that’s capable of killing in the slowest of speeds and stop being so sanctimonious and take responsibility for what your driving. Or in this case ridi
Absolutly right, in 40yrs of driving have never come close to hitting a predesrian because in busy high streets I am also observing people on the pavements and driving at a speed that will allow me stop if one of them decides to wander across the road, its called anticipation, sadly lacking in to many drivers and cyclist, who an easly reach speed of 40mph on a bike like that
Poor lass, wooton is s**t anyway
