A vital ATM has been reinstated in Shalfleet, restoring a service which many in its rural community ‘rely on every day’.
Following a previous withdrawal of the facility, a new free to use cash machine is now fully installed and operational at Shalfleet Village Stores with a new provider.
In Autumn last year, Shalfleet parish councillor Jonathan Hill wrote to ATM giant NCR Atleos about the cash machine’s removal, decrying a “dereliction of corporate responsibility”.
On behalf of Shalfleet Parish residents, he urged the American business service provider to immediately reconsider the decision.
Cllr Hill previously told of how the removal followed an “abrupt email”.
The company reportedly said the machine would be withdrawn within days, citing insufficient profitability as the reason.
There was, he said, no consultation, no notice – “just a decision which disregards the impact on local residents”.
Cllr Hill told the Local Democracy Reporting Service yesterday (12th February) the ATM’s reinstatement was not just a convenience but a “vital service” helping to keep the village connected, supported and resilient.
He said:
“Shalfleet residents will be pleased to hear that a brand‑new, free‑to‑use ATM is now fully installed and operational at Shalfleet Village Stores, restoring a service that many in our rural community rely on every day.
“The return of cash access is the result of determined, collaborative effort. Access to cash remains essential for many local residents, particularly older people and those living in rural areas where bank branches have disappeared.
“This is a genuine local success story and a reminder of what can be achieved when a community stands together. Our thanks go to everyone involved.”
