The same tongs being used to handle raw and then cooked chicken and a staff member not washing their hands after handling raw burgers are just some of the factors that saw The Kebab House in Newport handed a 1-star food hygiene rating following an inspection in October. Environmental Health inspectors visited the takeaway of St James’ Street in Newport on 27th October, finding that standards were generally poor. Inspectors found that controls were not put in place to prevent cross-contamination of foods, noting that the following practices were seen being carried out including; a staff member using the same tongs for handling both cooked and raw chicken, a staff member failing to wash their hands after handling raw burgers and ready-to-eat cheese slices were being stored next to raw burgers. Certain foodstuffs such as mozzarella, sweetcorn, cooked beef, ham and pepperoni were being stored at a temperature of around 14c and until instigated by the inspector no corrective action was taken. It was also found that a staff member in a supervisory role was not familiar with what records were required in terms on monitoring foods. Hand wash basins were obstructed in the kitchen and cloths used for wiping food debris off the kitchen surfaces were also used to wipe hands. The inspector noted that several cloths were left lying around. A statement from The Kebab House, said following the official visit, a follow-up meeting was held to discuss their concerns about the findings and a re-inspection will take place. The takeaway said it had also employed a food safety consultant to ensure its valued customers and staff are “taken good care of”.
