Island Roads have tonight (Thursday) put Fairlee Road and a section of Shide Road under emergency road closures following a ‘large scale’ water leak, subsequently freezing on the carriageway.
With temperatures dropping to below freezing and two water leaks which are being described as ‘large scale’, it has been deemed necessary to close the 2 busy main roads in Newport.
Fairlee Road has been closed for its entire length, according to the local authority, and the upper section of Shide Road has been closed to traffic.
Southern Vectis buses have been put on diversion.
Island Roads apologise for the inconvenience. It is not currently known when the roads are likely to be reopened.
Motorists should allow extra time for their journeys Friday morning.
A spokesperson for Island Roads has said:
“We have put on 2 Emergency Road Closures this evening for the entire length of Fairlee Road and Upper Section of Shide Road near to the junction with St Johns Road, Newport. This is due to a large scale Southern Water Leak in the carriageway. We apologise for any inconvenience.”
Southern Vectis has added:
“Fairlee Road has been closed because of ice caused by a burst water main. Routes 5 and 9 will divert via Staplers. Fairlee Road/Medina will not be served. Apologies for any inconvenience”
UPDATE ON FRIDAY – Island Roads has confirmed that Fairlee Road has re-opened.

People just as well forget trying to get into Newport from the east this morning, staplers will be carnage!
Seen a number of twit’s washing there cars on drive and water run off freezing on pavement/ roads – at least they won’t be driving this morning as door handles and door might be frozen. Why need to wash car in these conditions as only get dirty again 1st drive out. It will be frost free by Sunday.
I like to keep my range rover clean with all the salt on the roads. Personally I don’t think salt or grit should be put on the roads. People should just purchase suitable tyres or a suitable Vechile for the weather.
In the summer we use my wife’s convertible or my classic car and the Range rover is mainly left in the garage apart from driving down to the gate to collect post (when or if it arrives)
It must be nice to have the income to afford a separate car or tyres for when the weather gets cold and icy lol
Don’t forget the Ferrari for the summer and the box van so that butler can take the horses out for a walk ………. Penis
Shut up you moron..
They should be fined for causing public danger.
Gosh Roger, surely you can get one of the servants to do menial tasks such as collecting the post. I usually prefer to take the landau when the weather is chilly, although it is hard to find a good postillion these days. Far more civilized mode of transport.
I think some prople don’t know a joke when they see one?
