A hair salon business serving around 4 or 5 clients per day will operate out of a garden shed in the Isle of Wight’s county town.
County Hall accepted Ellie Byerley’s proposed change of use of an outbuilding in her rear garden at 21 Albany Road in Hunnyhill, concluding the plan would not be ‘materially harmful’ to the conditions of neighbours.
Ms Byerley previously said her hours of work will be Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 09:00/10:00 until 18:00, Thursday from 10:00 until 20:00 and Saturday from 10:00 until 16:00. She said these times are liable to change.
Planners said the proposal’s impact on the character of the area would be ‘minimal’ and the structure would not overwhelm the plot or cause it to appear overdeveloped or cramped.
A decision report said
“Environmental Health have noted that the business would be run on a small scale and that they do not anticipate an adverse impact resulting from the use and have advised that conditions be imposed that would limit hours of operation.
Ms Byerley’s application form said:
“I am currently self-employed. By bringing my business home enables me to have more flexibility with when I can work.
“It will also allow me to provide a much more personal/tailored experience for my customers.”
A total of 5 conditions were attached to the council’s consent for reasons of compliance with legislation and planning policy and local amenity.

Beats paying extortionate landlord rents.
Maybe this is the future for many other businesses.
Good luck
Good to see planners helping someone one wanting to work.
Plenty of houses where people turn up non stop for drugs.
