Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council (NCCC) has agreed to award hundreds of pounds in grants to a festival and a scout group.
A total of £500 will go to the Xtreme Explorer Scout Unit for 14–18-year-olds based in Newport and £300 will be given to Fairest Isle Festival.
The council’s former chair, Cllr Vix Lowthion, put forward a proposal to donate the funds which was passed at NCCC’s meeting earlier this week (Monday).
Xtreme Explorer Scout Unit currently has 18 youth members and four adult leaders, and each year runs Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) or Scout Award Expeditions for young people, according to its application form.
This year the outfit is taking two groups to Dartmoor in August to complete bronze or silver level expeditions.
The Scout Unit has said research shows that young people achieving DofE or Scout Awards learn vital life skills to support them in their development, broadening their opportunities, and helping them make a valuable contribution to their local communities.
Fairest Isle Festival has commissioned a Recorder Songbook from recorder player Miriam Monaghan as part of the Isle of Wight ‘Can You Hear Us?’ initiative – which will be shared electronically with 2,000 children on the Island and southern mainland, a separate application form said.
“There will be an in-person schools’ workshop on Friday, 15th May, led by the composer.
“The final part of the education programme is a Recorder Extravaganza on Monday, 18th May 18, where 25-plus children will give a concert to parents and family – where they will be joined by the distinguished recorder quartet Palisander.”
