Bembridge Heritage and Visitor Centre will be officially re-opening in its new location at Weaver’s Yard, Lane End tomorrow (Wednesday).
That’s behind the Welcome Store. I was hoping we could have a grand ‘do’ but Covid says no! So it will be a very quiet, soft opening. That means we open the door at 10.00 and peel off the paper over the word OPEN.
The original centre had become damp from water ingress through the walls and a leaking roof, both of which were a threat to the integrity of the archive. In December and January, the situation became critical and dry storage had to be found quickly.
Members kindly provided short-term care in their conservatories and spare rooms and in February a unit was made available at Weaver’s Yard. The Heritage Centre was set to move in just as COVID-19 hit, which put the whole move on hold. Members finally took over the unit in August.
Due to the pandemic, there will be no big opening party. The doors will open at 10:00 on Wednesday 28th October and as with all museums, Bembridge Heritage Centre must comply with COVID-safe requirements. A maximum of 6 visitors at a time, including the volunteer on duty, will be permitted inside – all wearing a face covering of course.
Verena Sparrow, Chairman of Bembridge Heritage, says:
“Bembridge now has a Heritage Centre to be proud of and we hope you agree when you visit.
“As well as our range of Christmas cards we will have books, bookmarks and DVDs on sale. We hope to tempt you with other items in the future.
“Initially we will be open Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 15:00. Always happy to open by appointment at other times. Email [email protected]”.

Well done, everybody!
Looking forward to visiting.
