A yellow weather warning has been issued for the Isle of Wight with forecasters IW Met Service expecting multiple spells of heavy rain over the next 48 hours. Overnight, the Island saw 20-25mm of rainfall across many parts and this will be followed by a further 15-20mm later tonight (Wednesday) and into Thursday morning. The heaviest of the rain is likely to fall around rush hour tomorrow morning, with as much as 30mm of rainfall possible on top of the 25mm already witnessed. Another spell of rain will then move in later on Thursday afternoon and into the evening, as well as overnight, bringing a further 15-20mm of rainfall across many areas. The total 48-hour accumulation is likely to be in excess of 50mm which is well over half of the average rainfall for February as a whole. Islanders should be aware of the risk of localised flooding with rivers breaching their banks in a few areas. Driving conditions will be adverse with surface water and spray, as well as soil and silt washed across the roads. The yellow weather warning is in force from 04:00 on Thursday until 08:00 on Friday (9th February 2024).
