HM Coastguard, Sandown Lifeboat, the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and Police are all involved in an ongoing search and rescue operation at Luccombe.
It’s understood a male has fallen off a cliff between Shanklin and Ventnor – a notoriously hard to reach section of coastline.
Coastguard Rescue 175 helicopter from Lee-on-Solent is currently hovering over the scene and is expected to winch the casualty onboard before transferring him to Shanklin Beach, where paramedics are currently waiting.
Bembridge, Ventnor and The Needles Coastguard Rescue Teams are all currently involved in the incident, alongside Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat and an ambulance crew, critical care paramedic and operational commander from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
Emergency services were alerted at around 14:30 this afternoon.
UPDATE @ 15:34 – The casualty has now been successfully winched into the helicopter and has been flown directly to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport.
All resources are standing down from the incident following its successful conclusion.
A spokesperson for HM Coastguard has said:
“HM Coastguard received a call around 2.10pm to say that a walker had slipped down the cliff at Shanklin. Bembridge, Needles and Ventnor coastguard rescue teams were all sent, along with the coastguard helicopter from Lee on Solent. Hampshire Police and Isle of Wight Ambulance service were also involved.
“The walker was winched by the helicopter and taken to St Mary’s Hospital.”

More bad dog walking on the Isle Of Wight
Dog walking? Crystal ball got its rumours mixed up today you muppet!you need to get out more perhaps near a cliff edge? Don’t worry your umbilical cord too your keyboard will stop any “Accidents”!.
The Captain with his unwanted comments again
More people taking unnecessary risks…
To ‘the Captain”. The male wasn”t walking a dog! He slipped and fell around 15 feet and there wasn’t a dog in sight. It was an accident.
He should have gone to specsavers….
What stupid comments. Hopefully it pleases your tiny mind lol.
If you slip down a cliff, then you’re too close to the cliff edge. Totally unnecessary
We have all fallen over at some point, so give this person a break, just glad we have such a dedicated team of professionals that can help a person in need, thanks to them it was a great outcome, thank you all who participated today well done !
Well said, E.N! Making fun ouit of someone’s misery is so childish; there appears to be little empathy around these days.
Not on a cliff edge!!
If you walk that close you take the risk and pick up the tab.
What I find so very odd about this, is the incident occurred between Ventnor & Shanklin, at Luccombe! Yet the only resource sent who appears to have gone to the correct location is the Helicopter. Why on earth were 3 Coastguard teams sent from across the Island to assist a person who’s fallen down a cliff between Ventnor & Shanklin, ( Luccombe) yet they all descend on to Shanklin seafront? One can only surmise, the need for extra resources, is if one fails. Therefore surely the information sent to the Coastguard helicopter would have been the same given to the coastguard teams?
We all make daft decisions but i would like to think they may make a donation to the lifeboat for their troubles
