Cowes RNLI, the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and HM Coastguard came to the rescue of a boy who had fallen from a height onto the rocks at Cowes yesterday evening (Saturday).
At around 17:30, a member of the public called HM Coastguard to report that a boy had fallen off the stone balustrade along The Parade, landing on the rocks below.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service initially responded to the call and were able to reach the casualty but upon assessing the situation requested help from the RNLI.
Crew from the nearby Cowes RNLI launched their inshore Atlantic 85 lifeboat, Sheena Louise, and reached the casualty just after 19:00.
With the tide coming in, the RNLI crew waded out to the casualty and, with assistance from the paramedics, transferred the casualty on to the lifeboat and to Trinity Landing. There, they were met by members of the Needles Coastguard Rescue Team and further paramedics, and the casualty was transferred to a waiting ambulance.
Thankfully, after a thorough check by paramedics, the boy’s injuries were minimal and he was able to return to his family.
Myles Hussey, helm at Cowes RNLI, said:
“We were glad to be able to assist this evening. With the tide rising fast, and the casualty in low water, it was a tricky manoeuvre to get the lifeboat close enough. I am proud of our volunteer crew and grateful to the ambulance paramedics who worked so seamlessly with us to complete the rescue. Many thanks also to the event security and HM Coastguard for their assistance.”
The Cowes RNLI crew returned to station at 19:30 and washed down the lifeboat ready for service.
