The Isle of Wight Council is looking to bump up the cost of parking once again with a proposal to increase the hourly rate by 25p across the board from 1st July 2023.
In a bid to generate most revenue for the Council’s coffers, the Alliance administration has proposed a Budget which includes targeting motorists who need to park their cars.
If approved, drivers will have to fork out an additional 25p an hour to park. So, for example, if you are paying to park on Shanklin seafront and are paying by PaybyPhone, the cost will increase from £2.10 to £2.35 for 1 hour. Don’t forget that is now year-round too…
In addition, overnight parking charges will increase. Historically, it was always free to park after 18:00 but a £1 overnight fee was introduced a few years back, increasing to £2 in the summer months. It is now proposed that that fee will increase again, although the exact details have not been released yet.
Permit holders will also be hit… the cost of the All Island permit will be going up b 20% from July which equates to an extra £10 a month, or £110 a year.
The 200m resident permits will also be going up by 20% under the plans, with an increase in cost for tourist permits too.
The Council will make a final decision on the Budget later this month.

That should clear some more shops from the high street great work
Why can’t we clear car parks from the country side instead? They are so ugly!
I don’t understand this council.
Park down a side road.
Oh is this making back the money from the free hours parking in Newport? For the last few months ! Thought it was too good to be true, IOW Council giving us something for free!
I’ve lived on the island for ten years and never paid for parking.
Free parking is abundant, only tourists pay for parking.
Very true, not good for tourism, stinging tourists.
New slogan for the council, “The Isle of Wight Council – Killing Business, Killing Shops”
Agree and killing the whole island residence as well businesses in towns on the island must be disgusted with these increases as it won’t help them or encourage people to to support them .
With the council wanting more and more out of islanders it’s about time we demanded more from them
Yeah, if only they removed the pedestrian area in Cowes and turned it into a giant parking lot, I’d love to go for a chill walk to shops and restaurants there then, all the fresh fumes cars bring, possible death if you’re not 100% focused when crossing the street, Cowes would finally feel alive like cities with a lots of traffic, like Newport.
It is as if they want the high streets to fail!
That’s the plan from our WEF Leaders
So more seniors will use their bus passes and that costs the council even more – well thought through
Though less road tear so maintenance cost is lowered?
Boycott where ever possible folks.greedy sods
And let me guess 8 months time free parking for 2 hours to help save shops in the high street
People are struggling to pay bills already so the council helps out with inflation busting eye watering rises.
Well done guys – I would award you the moral low ground but I’m afraid you still have a way to go to beat the energy companies and bankers.
Maybe next year…?
Cash cows?
1. That’s just about inflation, isn’t it?
2. It’s being partly paid from my taxes as well and I don’t even have a car. Same with roads that, wait for it, often don’t have a pavement for me to walk on.
(No, your VED doesn’t pay for roads. It goes into one bucket in HM Treasury with everything else. And yes, it’s VED, not “a road tax” ;))
That’s a cash cow.
Cars are most heavily subsidised, just think about all the free road parking they get – that’s a lot of space maintained by all the public for the benefit of just drivers.
Oh shut up you damn idiot.
Well rounded argument, you win.
Do you need any subsidy today?
It’s just easy money I try not to use a council car park and go to a privately owned one. I’d rather give my money to a company that are not even based on the island. This will kill the beaches and shops for summer It’s not surprising we are losing tourists
That’s literally raise by inflation. Hardly “cash chow” I’d say, lol!
Or do you want some free benefits? Because with inflation rising, lack of increase would be exactly that 😉
Hey!
It’s fine when I get council tax holidays, it’s only wrong when those povos get benefits!
You can’t compare them.
It’s much cheaper and more variety from Amazon, no potholes to negotiate, no drunk or drugged up drivers and best of all no road closures that aren’t actually closed.
Just like our Council Tax bill, this Council just keep increasing it.When is it all going to stop? The cost of living is out of control and now parking charges! Disgusting.
Absolutely disgusted, bad enough with the Council putting up everything and now local Councils agreeing to do same. Death Nail on the Island for sure, even holiday makers will find out it is cheaper to go to the continent than come over here. So much for tourism being our main purpose in life.
On Isle of a Wight a tourist can hike through AONB, cycle on Red Squirrel Trail, ride a horse on a beach, or just lay there, sail or go for a swim, play golf, visit a castle and a palace and enjoy a night out with fine-dining or cocktails…
…none of those things inherently requires cars or parking.
Are you saying we made all those tourism opportunities dependent on cars with no viable alternatives? Huh, sounds like a mistake to do something like that, specially on a relatively small island.
“fine dining” Very funny.
Take note, IOW council, that I will be continuing my policy of ensuring that you will not be getting even 1p more than shown on my CT bill. You are more useless than is possible to describe. A waste of space.
Did they not make £3.6 million profit this year from parking??? How many more small independent businesses will be closing,,like they have since the double yellow line brigade started collecting TAX over the last 10/15 year for what benefit????
While I really feel for the Islanders and the negative affect on shops and high streets, I comment as a mere overner who loves the Island and with our family spends several weeks every year on the Island. Firstly the enormous cost of the ferry crossing.is now causing us to cut back a bit but to then increase parking charges is going to put a lot of visitors off I assure you. I read of toilets being closed and of course reflect on how Sandown particularly looks and wonder if holidaymakers will still feel tempted to visit the Island which obviously will have a knock on with restaurants, pubs and even amusements suffering loss of income.
