Scores of protestors gathered at Church Litten in Newport to demand better working conditions for midwives on Sunday (20th November).
The protest was organized by Heather Wilkins from the Birth Space, which supports families preparing for birth.
Heather said:
“The March for Midwives Campaign is asking the government to fund midwives properly.
“The Isle of Wight is 1 of only 2 trusts in the country to be fully staffed after a successful recruitment campaign. Of every 30 midwives that are trained 29 leave the profession. Midwives conditions are family birthing conditions. I personally would like to thank all midwives who go above and beyond the call of duty.
The protest was attended by Ryde Mayor Michael Lilley, who had previously been on the March for Midwives in 2021.
Mr Lilley said:
“I 100% support the midwives. I came to the protest last year. Midwives are absolutely crucial to our society. They are some of the kindest people I’ve ever met. They deserve so much more.

Hello is that you there del boy protesting?
That was a good spot Rodney
Many working people are struggling. We clapped and cheered for our keyworkers, now let’s call for a government that pays them properly. We have been meeting since February, first Saturday every month, 12 noon, in St James Square Newport, protesting against Austerity, calling for government action against the Cost of Living Crisis, calling for a general election. Enouh is Enough! Please join us on Saturday 3rd, especially if you clapped for keyworkers or had a rainbow thankyou sign. See you all there.
