Isle of Wight residents are reporting lengthy waits for several frontline health services, a watchdog has found.
Islanders told Healthwatch Isle of Wight of delays for autism and ADHD assessments as well as gastroenterology, cardiology and GP appointments.
Healthwatch’s 13th December to 12th January Intelligence Report recorded 59% of overall feedback for the Island’s health and social care services as negative (75 responses), 38% as positive (47) and 3% mixed or neutral (4).
The 2 most common topics raised with the watchdog were GP services and those relating to Autism and ADHD, with largely negative responses for both.
Findings also included entirely positive feedback for residential care home, pharmacy, dermatology and addiction services and a generally good assessment of care home nursing, care at home, dentistry and inpatient care.
One resident told Healthwatch:
“I’m waiting for a gastroenterology appointment at St Mary’s, the hospital told me it’s a 38 week wait.”
Another said they were still waiting on a cardiologist appointment 6 months on.
In addition, the watchdog heard of someone being on the waiting list for an autism assessment for four years, with no offer of support.
A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said:
“We welcome this report by Healthwatch Isle of Wight, and will be considering its contents as we continue to develop our Island services.
“We value our ongoing relationship with Healthwatch. Through that work, we are able to gain an even richer insight into people’s feedback, to help us make improvements that matter most to our Island communities.”
An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson said:
“The council is proud of the service it commissions from Healthwatch Isle of Wight and values the work that they do to support Island residents.
“The Healthwatch Isle of Wight quarterly intelligence report provides great insight into health and social care locally and forms part of the council’s oversight of services. The themes and trends identified shape our services and those that are commissioned.”

A family member having to wait 18 months for a one to one mental health specialist..so that great !!!! their ill now not able to go back to work spent last 18 months on various drugs ..none have worked.
Why do we have so many kids jumping on the Autism ADHD bandwagon oh yes maybe benefits?
They don’t want to work, they know being on
Benefits is better than working, it pays much
more.
How long can the country keep dishing out free
money!
No reason you cannot work with either ADHD or Autism (depending where you are on the spectrum), should be no need to claim benefits for the majority.

You can generally spot the families that say they have an ‘autistic’ kid!!
