The main road into East Cowes is to be closed throughout the day this Sunday (12th May). Island Roads is to close Whippingham Road between 08:00 and 18:00, so that ‘surface dressing’ works can be undertaken. The works will see the road treated with a bitumen binder and stone chippings before it is compacted by a roller – any loose chippings will then be removed by a sweeper. Vehicle access is prohibited between East Cowes Road and Folly Lane during the works so traffic will be diverted via Alverstone Road. The section between Racecourse and East Cowes Road will be controlled by temporary traffic lights. On a section of the diversion, a convoy vehicle will control traffic in either one direction or the other. As work progresses into East Cowes, then the queues should be contained in Whippingham Road leaving traffic in the surrounding areas moving freely. An Island Roads spokesperson said:
“It is important that this work is done because of the need to maintain a safe surface on what is a very busy road. Unfortunately there is never a ‘right time’ to do the work as it will inevitably cause some inconvenience. “We can’t risk doing it overnight because the warmer daytime temperatures are needed to assist the process but we hope that doing it on a Sunday will help reduce disruption. “We would advise motorists to avoid the area if they can on Sunday 12th May – particularly between 8am and 10:30 am – and to leave additional time for journeys if travel through this area is necessary.”
During May, Island Roads will be undertaking ‘surface dressing’ works on roads across the Island.

Hopefully no serious fires in east cowes that night then
This is the biggest bodge job you can do on a rd, no surprise really seeing it’s island Rds!!
Drive through and if people wanna play chicken, bring it on
Of course, after the East Cowes fire station is shut, never saw that coming. this bit of road is one of the most prestine on the island.
What’s the betting the Flosting Bridge will be operating that day.
Lol
Going to be dull not much sun at all on Sunday Could even be wet apparently good weather is breaking up .
so will it be put off or still carry on as programmed ,if it carries on despite no sun shine warmth it could be done starting early evening/ overnight We will see.
B Y the way there are many other roads worse than the intended that need repairing/sorting first
Surface dressing..What a quick fix bodge job is this 1970s…i like out at calborne they ripped up cats eyes and done the same..cheap crap ..well they can’t do a proper job anyway so bodge it up best they can do…
Don’t forget to use the floating thing if u need to ,oh wait that will be broken over the weekend
Island Roads state, and I quote, “there is never a right time to do these works”.I disagree. Try doing it outside the tourist season, and better still overnight when there is little or no traffic using the otherwise busy road.
Wow great day for motorists, rd closures for walk the wight, rd closures for island roads!!!!!
I better allow 1hr plus to get to work then …..
I do think I r could have picked another day rather than clash with walk the wight ….
They must realise this is a traditional event raising funds for a charity…..and very worthwhile.
Good luck catching the ferry, then. Surface dressing is a complete waste of time and money, as Island Roads should well know.
Not much better before Island Roads. The legal requirement is that the white painted (longer), hazard lines must commence 90ft before the hazard, (bends, junctions &c). During the 80’s I was regularly driving the Forest Road to Bouldnor for work. I saw 2 council guys drilling up cats eye and moving it about 18ins towards Yarmouth. Every day these guys were a bit further down the road. One day curiosity got the better and I pulled up asked what the job was. Apparently some years back, the paint liners got their dimension wrong and had to be corrected. But not before these two guys had spent most of the summer moving cats eyes for miles about 18inches. Passing each day was like I got to know them. Is it only the Island this would happen?
You must be the most boring person in the world!
Glad I’m not thinking of using Brocks Copse Road anytime soon,
