An Isle of Wight teaching assistant has raised £800 in his solo half-marathon challenge to raise money for the Island’s mental health team, and for St George’s School.
Despite his plans for the challenge to take place in February being forced to change by the coronavirus lockdown, 30-year-old Jamie Hinson continued his training and has now completed the challenge – taking just over 2 hours to complete it.
Jamie, who now works at his former school, left education at 18-years-old and became the first former pupil to leave and gain full-time employment at the school.
His £800 fundraising total exceeded the £500 target he set, and will now be split in half, with 50% going to St Georges School, and the other 50% heading to the Island’s Mental Health Team.
Jamie said:
“The event was just perfect in every way. I had some people beep at me cheering me on, a few claps and cheers along the way and end, photos and films taken which was just brilliant.
“The comments and support I’ve had during this journey have just been amazing. It’s made my day. I would like to send out a massive thank you to those who cheered for me, wished me luck and donated.
“My good friend & former marathon runner Coral Leach supported me throughout my challenge, when I took the idea to her, she planned my half-marathon route, and two weeks before my event started we did some small running training sessions to get my route into my head.
“After I finished my half marathon I definitely felt the ache of my legs. A lot of people have asked me if I would do a full marathon and the answer to that is YES I would love too but the time would have to be right for me as I have a busy schedule.”
