The Food Warehouse is to open its first Isle of Wight store in time for Christmas, it has been revealed.
As previously reported by Island Echo, a planning application to change the use of the former PC World building in Newport from non-food bulky goods to a foodstore with 30% non-food floorspace was submitted back in March. The application was granted permission on 5th June.
The premises near to Dunhelm and Pets at Home has remained empty since July 2017. Over the past 3 years the unit has been continuously advertised but no tenant has been forthcoming – until now.
It has been confirmed that The Food Warehouse will open at Wakes Retail Park on 17th November 2020 at 08:00.
The Food Warehouse has 120 stores nationally with the current nearest being in Gosport. The store comprises of chilled and frozen products, together with fresh produce, branded grocery lines and a range of beverages and alcoholic drinks. Fundamentally, the retail offer also includes ‘big produce packs’ which enables customers to buy some products in bulk and ‘Case Saver’ deals aimed at families who want to stock up on frozen food with infrequent, large bulk shops.
Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the Iceland-owned chain has continued with plans to bring the new shopping experience to the Island. 20-25 jobs are expected to be created as a result.

Who really cares lol
All will become very clear all too soon.
So no explanation then? Just innuendo and your own racist thoughts!.
I think Geoff is referring to the island being used to home refugees as it’s classed as under populated and has plenty of room for them. I personally believe that a genuine refugee would stop at the first safe country they arrive in but that doesn’t happen and they some how manage to travel across europe with no money to get to our shores. They do it because they believe Britain is a perfect place for them, unfortunately most end up being taken advantage of when they arrive here. Allow the ones in who can contribute to the economy and the community but refuse entry to the ot so honest ones.
Marcus certainly agree, those half a dozen would be most welcome. That is unless our own people or those from overseas already settled here need those jobs now we are losing so many in the new CV world.
Spot on Marcus, some are so blinkered it is quite concerning. Years of media subtle indoctrination one assumes. Now the ‘subtle’ has been replaced by a blanking of any true if negative portrayals entirely, which is even more concerning.
What have refugees got to do with this new shop opening in Newport? Are the two linked in any way and I’m missing the point????
They have already said they are not closing the Newport branch.
Wrong, it’s gone too.
Jobs are very part-time, not a living wage
Better someone fills it much better than looking at an empty store.
Boat loads floating over to likely do just that. Be careful what you wish for.
Uneducated idiot
Another food shop – really !!
Like we haven’t got enough already.
The last thing we need is yet another food superstore. This can only be a brown envelope job.
Why do we need ANOTHER food retailer in Newport? What about parking?
Precisely Joe. There probably won’t be any parking spaces left for people who wish to park and go into Pets At Home or Currys.
Of no benefit to the Island. There is only so much money to be spent on the Island so another food shop will just dilute the demand meaning food shops will stop stocking the more unusual goods because they want to keep only those items which sell well, so choice suffers.
Why in bloody Newport ?? As Pippin says, there are enough FOOD shops in Newport.. how about having one in Ryde, or Cowes…or Yarmouth… who wants to get stuck in all the traffic of dirty Newport, just to food shop..? Ridiculous….. would be great if everyone banned themselves from going there, go to Ryde Iceland’s instead .. ! Ryde needs more income, Newport does not.
Hey, when it opens , probably be a good place to pick up some Covid-19… no doubt…lots of customers, but not many face masks…
