Despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, The Food Warehouse is continuing with plans to open their first Isle of Wight store in Newport.
As previously reported by Island Echo, a planning application to change the use of the former PC World building from non-food bulky goods to a foodstore with 30% non-food floorspace was submitted back in March. The application was granted permission less than 2 weeks ago, on 5th June, allowing plans to move ahead.
Now, planning permission is being sought to change the signage at Wakes Retail Park. Distinctive red and white branding will be applied to the front and side of the store, with another sign facing the dual carriageway on the end of the Currys unit.
The premises near to Dunhelm and Pets at Home has remained empty since July 2017. Over the past 2-and-a-half years the unit has been continuously advertised but no tenant has been forthcoming.
The Food Warehouse (TFW), which is owned by Iceland, has 120 stores nationally with the nearest being in Gosport. The store comprises of chilled and frozen products, together with fresh produce, branded grocery lines and a range of beverages and alcoholic drinks. Fundamentally, the retail offer also includes ‘big produce packs’ which enables customers to buy some products in bulk and ‘Case Saver’ deals aimed at families who want to stock up on frozen food with infrequent, large bulk shops.
20-25 jobs are expected to be created, although it is unknown when the store will open. However, the role of Store Manager is already being advertised.

Don’t care what it is, I’m not using it! Being treated like a child to enter these shops. The sheep people will use it, having their sheep dip at the entrance.
No just normal food at lower prices. Great for families struggling.
