A sailor who became injured onboard a sailing yacht near Newtown was airlifted to safety in a multi-agency rescue operation yesterday evening (Tuesday).
HM Coastguard received a call at around 17:40 reporting that a person had been injured aboard a yacht on the Solent, in the vicinity of Newtown Creek.
Coastguard Rescue 375 was scrambled to the incident from Lee-on-Solent, with RNLI lifeboats from both Yarmouth and Cowes also tasked.
Needles Coastguard Rescue Team was mobilised to Yarmouth Harbour.
The casualty was eventually airlifted and flown to Yarmouth, where the helicopter landed on Yarmouth Green at around 19:00.
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service were waiting to receive the sailor, who was walking wounded and was seen walking to the awaiting ambulance wrapped in a foil blanket.
The casualty was subsequently conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital for further assessment and treatment.
