The Island is to be showcased in the next episode of Channel 5’s The Big Steam Adventure this week. The series stars presenter and journalist John Sergeant, actor Peter Davison and steam expert Paul ‘Piglet’ Middelton as they enjoy all things steam up and down the British Isles. In this latest episode – the 2nd of season 2, John, Peter and Piglet board the Waverley, the last passenger steamship, and navigate the Solent. On the Island, they will take a century-old Sentinel steam lorry to Carisbrooke Castle via the scenic Military Road, and whilst exploring the castle’s history things lead to a boule game, with John treating Piglet and Peter at the Crab Shed at Steephill Cove in Ventnor. The next day, they ride the IW Steam Railway, with Peter trying carriage restoration before boarding the 135-year-old steam engine, Calbourne. Toward Bembridge, John and Peter hitch a ride on Dragon Fly, a converted steam roller turned showman’s wagon. The latest episode of The Big Steam Adventure will air at 20:00 this Friday (10th May) on Channel 5.

What a lovely ship the Waverley is. To think we once had a paddle boat on the Island which was entombed as a so called night club rather than used for what she was designed for. The Ryde.
Probably because the 60’s were over and we were offered a brighter, faster and better future. So it was common practice to put old paddlers into the entertainment business such as dance clubs. Presumably because all the old dance halls were being demolished. So she was moored adjacent an identical venue, the PS Medway Queen. Some years later, was rescued by a bunch of volunteers and towed back to her home town of Medway. Today, a preserved static museum. The PS Ryde lost money and after several ownership sales, IMO was arson for insurance. By the time we discovered the better future was all bull, it was too late to go back. Let’s hope one day the Medway will get sufficient money to be seaworthy and have 2 paddlers working our coast.
The big pile of steaming what?

You’re kinda off topic with this Boris. But if you feel this strongly about it, what stopped you choosing a career in the traffic police division and do something about it, instead of the current employment position you hold today?
