A Cowes shipyard has launched a UK first with the construction of an eco-friendly sightseeing jetboat, which is now operating on the River Thames.
Built by Diverse Marine and designed by Chartwell Marine, the 16-metre Rocket Rebel is the UK’s first eco sightseeing jetboat for commercial passenger use.
It has been commissioned by Thames Rockets as part of a drive to cut emissions and modernise river tourism ahead of London Rivers Week 2025.
Capable of carrying 26 passengers at speed, the aluminium vessel is powered by twin jet engines using low-emission HVO biofuel. She is Tier III emissions compliant, cutting nitrogen oxide by 90% and producing up to 90% less CO₂ compared to standard marine diesel.
Ben Colman, Director at Cowes-based Diverse Marine, has said:
“We’re incredibly proud to see a vessel of this importance being built here on the Isle of Wight. It shows the world that Cowes continues to be a centre of excellence for marine innovation and high-performance boatbuilding.”
The £1.6million vessel marks a major milestone for both the River Thames and Isle of Wight shipbuilding, setting a new benchmark for sustainable sightseeing experiences in the UK and beyond.
Diverse Marine is also involved in developing electric ferries, hybrid defence craft and offshore wind support vessels, reinforcing the Isle of Wight’s position as a hub for clean maritime technology.

Looks a beauty, well done Cowes.
