Consultant plastic surgeon Professor Anthony Roberts OBE, who lives at Haseley Manor in Arreton, has released a book detailing his work as a surgeon in a career that spanned over 40 years.
Anthony’s career saw him tend to casualties in 4 wars and 6 world disasters and visit countries as far away as Botswana. He now recounts the tales of these trips and others in this newly-released book.
Back in 2011, Roberts – who lives in Arreton with his wife, Vivian – was awarded an OBE for services to the medical field, ornithology and the community on the Isle of Wight.
Most doctors will never be involved in a disaster during their working lives but Anthony was involved in treating casualties from the Bradford City football stadium fire in 1985 that claimed 56 lives and resulted in hundreds more being injured, many of them with severe burns.
It had a major effect on him, and on all those involved. It started his appearances on the media and his overseas visits to other countries to talk about it. And subsequently, he was asked to join and lead other international efforts to provide help.
The book also explores notions such as how it felt to be involved in treating casualties as a result of major incidents and some of the more unusual aspects of the role including working with the Royal Protection Group.
Anthony’s book costs £25 and is available to purchase here.
