The Isle of Wight Over 50’s cricket team secured a 6-wicket victory over Cornwall at Ventnor CC on Thursday (21st May).
The result marks their first county Over 50’s win against opposition other than the Channel Islands for many years.
After winning the toss, Cornwall elected to bat first and made a strong start, reaching 86 without loss before the Isle of Wight bowlers fought back through disciplined spells from Andy White (1-36) and Kerry Rice (1-32).
Cornwall captain Sean Hooper top scored with 52, while former England goalkeeper Nigel Martyn added 43, but the visitors struggled to accelerate their run rate and eventually closed on 219-6 from their 45 overs. Ali Cotton was the pick of the Isle of Wight bowlers with figures of 3-50.

The Isle of Wight reply began with an early setback after losing a wicket cheaply, but a crucial 125-run partnership for the second wicket put the hosts firmly in control.
Andy Day produced the standout innings of the match with an impressive 75 from 70 balls, including 4 sixes, while Mark Fletcher added a patient 54.

At 156-3, victory was firmly within sight with the hosts requiring just 4 runs per over. White then contributed an unbeaten 30 alongside useful knocks from Jim Thorn (19) and Rice (26 not out) as the Isle of Wight eased to victory with 6 wickets in hand.
The Over 50s side return to action against the Channel Islands in Lymington on Sunday (14th June).
