The Lord-Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight, Mrs Susie Sheldon, attended a brief service given by The Archdeacon of the Isle of Wight at the War Memorial in St Thomas’s Square in Newport on Remembrance Sunday.
Mrs Sheldon laid a wreath as the Queen’s representative, with others present including Chairman of the Council, George Cameron, and Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely.
Meanwhile, Deputy Lieutenants laid wreaths on War Memorials around the Island on behalf of the Isle of Wight Lieutenancy. Where services were taking place within the Government rules, the Deputy Lieutenants took part in these services but elsewhere they attended on their own and laid a wreath at an appropriate moment.
The Lord-Lieutenant has said:
“It was sad that our normal community Remembrance Events could not take place this year but I am aware of the enormous effort that has been put into making sure we mark the day appropriately. Many people have quietly laid their own wreaths and wreaths for the organisations they represent and our War Memorials around the Island show that we have not forgotten the huge sacrifices that have been made in the past”.
On Tuesday 3rd November, the annual Garden of Remembrance Service was held at Carisbrooke Castle and crosses were laid in memory of members of the Royal Navy, the Army and the Royal Air Force and well as other uniformed Servicemen and women.
