The Isle of Wight’s new local plan will be changed to include a higher annual housing target, full council agreed last night (Wednesday).
In an Extraordinary Meeting, 21 councillors voted for an officers’ recommendation to amend County Hall’s draft Island Planning Strategy (IPS), including increasing its planned number of new homes from 453 per year to 703 annually.
A total of 6 members voted against whilst 4 abstained.
Another proposal lodged by the Conservative and Empowering Islanders groups, that County Hall ‘cannot agree’ to ‘significantly increased’ housing targets ‘imposed by central government through the Planning Inspectorate’, was defeated.
Full council’s move follows concerns raised by the government’s Planning Inspectorate over the draft IPS in a Post Hearings Letter sent to the council on 22nd April.
Planning inspectors said the draft IPS’s 453 new homes housing target ‘would not be justified’ and instead put forward a ‘minimum’ figure of 703 per year.
A council report said:
“A new local plan, the draft IPS, has been prepared to replace the Island Plan Core Strategy 2012.
“Previously full council agreed to consult on it and then submit it to the Secretary of State for independent, public examination. Over a period of two weeks between 25th February and 6th March, the examination hearing sessions took place.
“On 22nd April, the inspectors’ Post Hearings Letter was sent to the council. In their letter, the planning inspectors set out a number of areas of work that they consider it would be necessary for the council to carry out should it wish to continue.”
The report set out two options: amend the draft IPS in the way inspectors have suggested to address their concerns or withdraw the plan and start afresh.
Officers recommended councillors vote for option A: amending the draft to take on board the inspectors’ suggestions.

Where are the jobs for these new owners? Are the developers going to pay for improving the road system to cater for all the extra cars these schemes will produce?
A.I is the future, people won’t be required
for many job roles.
Universal basic income will be the future.
That will please all the whingers.
703 lol, it’s no wonder the island is falling apart
and crumbling.
You only have to drive around to see half the island is being
held up by scaffolding, not to mention no one in
Ventnor as cleared the fallen rock.
I must say the island authorities always guarantee to
give us Islanders a good laugh with their imaginary numbers.
I just saw a pig fly by my window and it’s not April fools day.
So what happens when we run out of room then?
we are an island,or do our dopey council not know that!
no mention of another hospital or doctors surgeries to cope with it then?
All the persons who allow such building
to take place will move off the island once they
have Fcuked it up for everyone else.
They don’t care about running out of room as long as their quota is met. Living in their comfortable houses making decisions that won’t affect their lives. They won’t be happy until every last piece of land is taken and we know it won’t be islanders that will benefit. Take a look around now …people need to open their eyes
Most of these councillors have an hugely questionable mandate to make these sort of important and long lasting decisions. Remember, we had our voted stolen, The excuse for them remaining in the job is that they are “caretaking” till the new mayor, or whatever they decide to do, is appointed.
That being the case they should not be increasing any targets. These people do not have a mandate given by Islanders to do that sort of thing!
RIP Isle of Wight farming. There’ll be no land left for it at this rate.
Do these 703 homes per year also include additional medical practices, schools, road networks??
Our roads can’t handle the current quantity of vehicles let alone the increase that would follow.
One word – doomed!!
The plan is to wrap up farming and the majority
of food will be plant based / synthetic rubbish.
Make the most of steak while you still can.
A kleenex moment….
More like Andrex
Where are they going to buiod them?
Do they have the infrastructure to cope?
Will there be ample parking?
Doubt if anyone has considered the above.
New flats were built in Upper High St in Ryde with no parking provided, business premises converted in Upper High St in Ryde again no parking provided. In fact the parking restrictions are worse now than they were when Upper High St was thriving.
Too be honest there are too many vehicles on the
island thesedays.
Some households have 4 vehicles to each household.
It’s getting silly, everytime my friends daughter arrives
home from work, she as trouble finding a parking space.
Permit parking would be the fairest system, then many
households will get rid of some of their unrequited
vehicles.
Absolutely agree . Wd use to live in Edward Street, on road parking, bad enough before they built those flats then became downright impossible. And we only had one car. Most families now own at least 2. So everyone from everywhere parked there , road residents forced to park elsewhere. Thank god not living there anymore
Who is going to build them?
The recommended “builder” we employed for what was quoted as a 3 week job has finally finished after 5 months.
Just the snagging to do now – which I will do myself rather than wait another 5 months…
This so called council would have been eliminated if we were allowed an election,, that is why they were so keen to delay it.
No doubt the mainland mayor will bump this figure up.
In ten years that’s 7000 new homes that’s a death nail for the iow the end of the island as we know it i won’t be here by then but I’ll be watching
more houses = more council tax, that’s all they think of, sod the hospital, roads, doctors, dentists, the infrastructure can’t cope as it is. Jerk Jordan is quite simply a moron and so bad for the island.
Build council houses.
