A fast-paced afternoon of goals, teamwork and new beginnings marked a milestone moment for grassroots football on 22nd February.
The Isle of Wight staged its first ever 3v3 Ladder Tournament on Sunday 22nd February, with 12 local teams descending on Lift Ryde Academy for an afternoon that showcased the future of youth football on the Island.
The innovative 3v3 format, set to be introduced nationally by The FA next season, was given a lively debut in Ryde as players from the U8 and U9 age groups embraced the smaller-sided, high-intensity style of play.
The U8s set the tone early. Over the course of 1 hour, each side competed in 10 fast-paced 4-minute matches, with just 1 minute between games. Despite many of the youngsters having already played morning fixtures, energy levels never dipped.
The ladder-style format meant teams moved pitches depending on results, creating a constant sense of jeopardy and opportunity. After a fiercely contested hour, Team Gibraltar held their nerve on the top pitch and won their final game to secure the U8 title in impressive fashion.
If the younger group had laid the foundations, the U9s built a festival on top of it.
With several recent fixtures having fallen victim to the recent severe weather, the U9 teams arrived eager to play and made up for lost time in emphatic style. Goals flew in, celebrations followed and sportsmanship remained strong throughout the session.
When the final whistle sounded, it was The Upsidedowns who claimed top spot, impressing with sharp passing, intelligent movement and clinical finishing across the hour to earn well-deserved bragging rights.
The event was made possible thanks to the support of Lift Ryde Academy, alongside the backing of coaches and parents who created an encouraging and positive atmosphere throughout the afternoon.
The tournament was hosted by Danny Worboyes of the Football Fun Factory and Paul “Marshy” Marshall of Isle of Wight Community Sports Coaching. The aim was to give players and teams an early taste of what to expect when The FA formally introduces the 3v3 format next season.
Following the success of the inaugural event, further tournaments are already being planned to help young players gain valuable experience in the new structure.
Families are being encouraged to follow social media channels for details of the next 3v3 Ladder Tournament, which organisers hope to stage during the Easter break.
