The Isle of Wight Council is launching a drink-drive campaign this festive season to remind motorists that good drivers don’t drive under the influence.
Drink driving is illegal and puts lives at risk as it impairs your ability to drive — even if it’s just one.
The council has commissioned advertising space on buses and some car ferries to help spread the message.
In addition, the authority continues to support the government’s THINK! campaign — ‘A Mate Doesn’t Let A Mate Drink Drive’ — which calls on mates to look after each other on a night out.
THINK! research shows that 8 in 10 young men agree that it is unacceptable to drive over the legal limit.
Councillor Karen Lucioni, Cabinet member for public safety, said:
“We would like to thank the majority of people who are safe and responsible motorists and encourage everybody, whether they are locals or visitors, to stay safe this Christmas.
“Drink driving is never worth the risk.”
PC Andrew Ball, of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary and Thames Valley Police joint operations roads policing team, said:
“Our dedicated roads policing officers work tirelessly to make our roads safer, and this includes enforcing the law against drink drivers.
“Even having just one drink can massively alter your ability to maintain control of your vehicle and drive safely. It’s simply not worth the risk when you consider the utter devastation a serious injury or fatal collision could cause.
“We will be carrying out regular patrols this December throughout Operation Holly to target drink and drug drivers.”

More wasting of public money by our stupid council. If someone is prepared to drink and drive, they are hardly going to take any notice of signs on buses are they.
Ha ha ha… 8 out of 10 ‘ Young Men ‘ what about the young women ?? There are far too many that drink and drive.. as it states ONE is too much.. I often see people come out of a pub and get into a car.. after knowingly have drank at least one drink.. sadly in general people think it won’t be them that get’s stopped.
But if you can drink drive in Gran Turismo with a steering wheel & clutch setup, why is real life any different in terms of reaction time and attentiveness??
so, the council is wasting our money getting involved in law and order, when…
could have saved the money and just let the police media team ask the island echo to run an article, reminding road users that they will be out and about as normal.
real reason is that councillor karen, just needs to do some state nannying and justify her job.
2 other ways to make money
No. 1 Fine people who park on Pavements.
No.2 Fine the Idiots including Taxi drivers who drive into the
“NO” Right Hand Turn Road off of Brading High Street into West Street!
is that not an all year round island drivers thing
From what I read weekly on Island News
The Drink Drive Campaign should be all year round.
A good drunk druggie doesn’t drive home, they fly home!
Don’t drink and drive because you will spill it.
Isn’t this something for the police to tackle, not the council
Just sit behind some old person in their Honda Jazz and you’ll be fine.
Driving wasted is a right of passage and I’ve been doing it for the last 40 years.
Least your honest
It’s actually a ‘rite of passage’, but either way a stupid comment.
Drug driving is probably an even bigger problem.
You should no Old school
Why not do a low life smack head breaking windscreens and burglary campaign. More scum on the streets than drink drivers on the road. Always the drivers being victimized because they are easy bait. I’m not condoning drink/snort drive but the scum are never monitored or watched out for.
Many will drive after having a drink and won’t think twice about it……..only if they get stopped and breathalysed.
Dumb and selfish!
If found drinking and driving, take there licence away for good, and let the scumbags get a bus or taxi.
how’s ur mate lee he still very handy
The Council campaign is a waste of money, we need a law reform to put the allowed alcohol & illegal drug limit to ZERO, as in many countries, they impair the reactions of drivers. We are just too soft on this issue, all found guilty should get a 5 year ban coupled with a 1 year prison sentence suspended for 10 years as minimum. The deterrent effect of the current penalties is not sufficient.
I am retired but am not a miserable old git, driving whilst impaired by drink or drugs takes too many innocent lives of all ages and we really need to get a grip on this. I am not against legalising cannabis use in private, However we need to remove the personal use excuse for all Class A drugs, it’s a get out of jail free card too many !
Should you be allowed to sell the amount of alcohol to one person to get you in such. State ? Once you have alcohol your brain changes and you don’t care to much ! Lets look at who is providing it It’s all about money from the bars to. The police !!!
