Residents across the Isle of Wight are being encouraged to help look after their waste and recycling collection crew through the winter months.
The request comes following the Isle of Wight Council’s recent road safety campaign.
Natasha Dix, the council’s strategic manager for the environment, said:
“This Christmas, we’re asking residents to help keep our collection crew safe when carrying out their job on the Island’s roads.
“They work in many locations across the Isle of Wight at the same time. Winter poses its own challenges for our waste and recycling teams, when it’s darker and weather conditions are more unpredictable.”
You can help look after your crew by:
- Putting your bin/sacks are out from 07:00 on your day of collection on the kerbside;
- Checking your property front is clear of trip hazards. Darker mornings and evenings mean less visibility for the crews on foot;
- Making sure overhanging trees/bushes are cut back to allow collection vehicles to pass safely;
- Being patient if there is a collection vehicle in front of you. Reduced visibility may mean you do not see on-coming traffic or collection crews on foot working around the vehicle.
Councillor Karen Lucioni, Cabinet lead for waste and recycling, said:
“Our collection crews, who are Islanders themselves, understand the danger posed when working on the roads, especially during the current dark mornings and nights.
“The safety of those working on the roads, other road users as well as pedestrians is always a top priority. Everyone should return home safely from work after their shift and everyone has a part to play in ensuring the safety of others and making this happen.”

Next you will be asking us to empty our own bins into the back of the lorry.
I have the bare faced audacity to have an extra black bin bag this week so it’s off to the tip to throw it in a skip.
As I could only get a very late booking it will be dark. I hope the Council look after my health and safety….
It’s crazy you don’t get parcel companies asking for pathways to be clear trees and bushes to be cut back pathways to be well lit and house numbers to be visible when dark. Do the bin workers just want to sit in the lorry while we load our own rubbish in the back.
And wish them a Merry Xmas. Our guys in Ryde are a great bunch, always helpful, always polite. They work really hard but still say “Morning” every time
Lot of respect for those guys, hard work and out in all weathers. I bet the whiners wouldn’t last 5 minutes doing their job.
The ones that come to brighstone on a Friday are brilliant
The bin guys are totally inconsistent in what they decide too take. (Recycling)..they are happy too take builders rubbish from flat refurbes!…sometimes guy hides it under other stuff in green bin but he also puts his black non in hus green bin! He dosdnt seperate ANYTHING . And yet his rubbish is taken with a word .What’s bloody point in us others recycling
Our bin men and women do a wonderful job in lousy weather. I plan to put a tenner in a Christmas card to thank them. Not much because I am poor but a simple gesture of gratitude.
These people do a job that not many would do by choice, in all weathers, householders are being asked to be sensible and be helpful, is that too much to ask?
At this time of year there is more waste than normal, just be a little more appreciative and considerate, these people work for a living and are human beings just like the rest of us.
This time of the year it is also darker and the job becomes more hazardous, we are all under more stress this year and people get stressed, hence it shows in comments unfortunately.
IT’S XMAS, and a time for good will from ALL!
Merry Xmas to ALL.
Our bin men in Bouldnor are brilliant they take everything we used to live in shanks in and the bin men there would not take any extra
thank you for the vineyard Bouldnor
Maybe it would be good idea if Natasha Dix STOPPED Idiots parking
Vehicles on Pavements, therefore making it safe for Bin collections to take place.
Great Preston Road in Ryde is a nightmare for bin men and pedestrians and other motorists.
Well Natasha Dix. I pay my rip off council tax for W Perera and you to waste so as far as I’m concerned, you can shove your statement up your a__. What a total Dix. The guys on the trucks are brilliant but as for you bunch of juice-heads in county hall can shove it. Sack the management and Perera
Well said.
This Council is run by a load of Overpaid useless idiots.
They don’t care about Road Safety etc etc
As for Council Tax, it’s the biggest con ever, if you’re lucky your bin gets emptied once a week
Not bad for £40 a week charge.
It’s about time these idiots at County Hall got off their ar*es and took a trip round the island to see what really goes on.
Instead many of them are still Working from Home on excessive salaries.
No wonder fcuk all gets done.
Time for change.
They r not a bad bunch of bin men on the island ,only fault I got with them is they block up traffic when they could move up 2 ft sometimes in to a gap to let traffic through
