Given its location in West Sussex, Glorious Goodwood is a meeting many horse racing fans in the Isle Of Wight head to every year. It is one of the biggest weeks of the year in the sport, and it attracts the best horses from across Europe.
Among the highlights of the meeting is the Sussex Stakes. This year’s renewal looks set to feature the Irish 2000 Guineas winner, Field Of Gold. The John Gosden-trained colt has been tipped to have a huge future ahead of him in the 1m division.
First Test Against Older Horses
Field Of Gold is likely to be taking on the older horses for the first time in his career in the Sussex Stakes. He has been installed as the 4/1 favourite in the bet on horse racing market for the Group One contest.
The bet calculator shows that Rosallion is the closest rival to Field Of Gold in the betting, as a £10 stake on the former St James Palace Stakes winner generates a total return of £55. Those horses are the last two winners of the Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh.
Field Of Gold made a big impression on the track on his seasonal reappearance in the Craven Stakes back in April. He surged clear of his rivals in the closing stages of that race at Flat Racing’s HQ.

Gosden’s latest stable star went into the 2000 Guineas as the hot favourite to have more success at Newmarket, but he had to settle for second place behind Ruling Court. He went one place better in a Classic just a few weeks later, winning the Irish equivalent by just under four lengths.
Lake Victoria Primed to Take on The Colts
Alcohol Free was the last filly to win the Sussex Stakes when she prevailed in 2021. Irish 1000 Guineas winner Lake Victoria will be bidding to replicate that success this year. She will tackle a strong field of colts in the Glorious Goodwood contest.
Lake Victoria was one of the last season’s outstanding two-year-olds in Europe. She won three Group One races, including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf at Del Mar. Like Field Of Gold, she was beaten on Guineas weekend at Newmarket but took the first prize in the Irish Classic.

Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien has won the Sussex Stakes six times in his career. Victory this year will see him match Sir Henry Cecil’s record of seven wins in the race. He could also saddle Henri Matisse and Diego Velazquez in what will be a strong team for the Ballydoyle man.
Notable Speech the Defending Champion
Last year’s Sussex Stakes winner Notable Speech has already had a run this season before he defends his crown at Goodwood. The Godolphin runner finished fourth in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury earlier in the campaign.
Only one horse in history has won back-to-back renewals of the Sussex Stakes and that was Frankel, who prevailed in 2011 and 2012. Notable Speech has been around the globe since his last win in the UK and a return to the Sussex venue might see him produce his best again.
The 2025 Sussex Stakes takes place on Wednesday, 30th of July. It will be day two of the five-day meeting at Goodwood.
