Bembridge RNLI’s inshore lifeboat launched to reports of a person drifting out to sea and a second person swimming to their aid off St Helens earlier this evening (Saturday).
Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the D-Class lifeboat at around 19:00, with the volunteer crew swiftly making their way towards St Helens soon after.
It was quickly ascertained that the female on the inflatable and the male attempting to go to her aid had both safely made it ashore.
The lifeboat was beached to ensure all was well, with Coastguard Rescue Officers from Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team also in attendance.
A concerned member of the public did the right thing in raising the alarm.
Just 3 hours beforehand, in the same area off St Helens, HM Coastguard responded to reports of 3 exhausted paddle boarders. Bembridge RNLI was tasked to launch but was stood down before the lifeboat hit the water.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.
