Bembridge RNLI rushed to the aid of a man who had severely injured his finger on board a bulk carrier heading for Brazil yesterday afternoon (Wednesday).
The ‘Alfred Albert Williams’ was launched at the request of Solent Coastguard at around 12:30 to medivac the crew member from the bulk carrier ‘Federal Spey’. The man had severely injured his finger whilst on passage westwards down the Channel en-route for Brazil.
The volunteer lifeboat crew rendezvoused with the ‘Federal Spey’ at around 13:40 and soon transferred the crew member to the lifeboat using the ship’s gangway ladder and a hoist for his baggage.
Having successfully got the injured man on board, the Alfred Albert Williams returned to Bembridge Lifeboat Station where the casualty was handed over to the awaiting ambulance crew and conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital.
The Tamar-class All Weather Lifeboat was made ready for service again by 15:00.
