David Hayles, director of Newport Football Club IW, has been elected as the new chairman of the club.
The role of chairman has been vacant since Paul Phelps stepped down back in January after seven years in the role.
At a meeting on Saturday evening, everyone present voted in favour of appointing Hayles with 100% of the vote.
Mike West and Robert Foad remain as directors of the club and the Supporter’s Trust agreed to support the three club officials to the full.
David said:
“I’m extremely honoured and grateful to the Supporter’s Trust for voting me in and giving me this opportunity to help rebuild this great football club.
“I have to be honest, the situation isn’t good financially, but myself, Mike and Bob along with the excellent Supporter’s Trust, have put into place an action plan which will not only help secure the club’s survival, but hopefully in two to three years time, we’ll be in a position to compete at a higher level, which we have to aim for.
“The club is currently in a transitional stage, but we have an outstanding team of volunteers here and we couldn’t do this without them. Our first job is to appoint a new manager within the next week or so who will help us to not only compete, but compete competitively in next season’s Sydenham Wessex League Premier division.”
Current boss Steve Brougham is stepping down from his role as manager at the end of the season and his three remaining fixtures in charge are against Fareham Town away (Tuesday 21st) and home to this year’s champions Petersfield Town next Saturday (25th April). Broughy’s curtain call will be the Isle of Wight Gold Cup Final crunch match against Cowes Sports on 1st May 2015 at Beatrice Ave, home of East Cowes Vics with a 19:30 kick off.
