The Isle of Wight is set to benefit from a £8.2million boost in funding which includes an extra £3million for social care, it has been announced this afternoon (Tuesday).
Following a vote in the House of Commons, the Government has confirmed councils in England will have access to a share of £49.2 billion in 2020/2021, an increase of £2.9 billion or 4.4% in real terms. This is the biggest increase in councils’ spending power for a decade.
The funding for the Isle of Wight, which has been confirmed by Local Government Secretary Robert Jenrick, represents a 6.2% increase on the previous year
The settlement will give the Isle of Wight Council access to an extra £3million in social care grant and ensure, on average, residents can expect to see the lowest increase in council tax bills since 2016.
Councillors are due to meet tomorrow evening to discuss the Island’s budget for 2020/21.
Local Government Secretary Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP has said:
“This Government is committed to levelling up every part of the country, investing in every region and giving communities control over making the decisions which are right for them.
“That’s why we’re confirming the biggest increase in councils’ spending power for a decade across England, while protecting residents from excessive rises in council tax.”
Provisional plans for the Local Government Finance Settlement for 2020/21 were published in December, followed by a period of consultation with the sector. This included the consideration of over 200 representations across technical and provisional consultations from a range of organisations, and Ministers met with representative groups including local councils, MPs and the Local Government Association.

Just about fill the hole left by the floating bridge fiasco.

……….
I sincerely hope the isle of wight council are reading that bit and aware that it is now public – we expect the lowest council tax bills possible, or they will have some explaining to do – and no, paying yourselves higher wages isn’t an excuse.
Watch that drop by a few million by the time it gets where its going.
There just waist it
Now then council have rethink on council tax hike or are you going to find a reason to keep it at 4.99%
Just seen a pig fly up the road outside my house, no sorry that was a lie not as good as the councils porkies!
More money for them to waste on a few more hair brained schemes.
This means the Isle of Wight Council will get £8,200,000.00 on top of the £124,058,064.52 it has already been getting. Amazing how much the Isle of Wight Council consumes, just in Government Funding only, eh?!
Spend it wisely, guys! Think ROI.
The word WISELY is not in the councils dictionary, but (GAMBLING) is at the top.
The goverment allows council to have this large sum to be invested with care , that never happens look at the high rise in council tax.
Let’s get some one in County Hall who have a passion in running the council correctly, not the muppets in there now!
I doubt if we will see a reduction in council tax!
What is the council doing with the huge amount of money they’ve earned over the last year from the fines parents have incurred due to absenteeisms of their children?
Think it’s time tax payers demanded to know where the money is actually being spent and ask the question under the freedom of information?
@pennygreen.
click on this link and you will get the monthly invoices for council expenditure – note the vast amount of money spent on taxis for special educational needs transport – they could save a fortune here by having a bus.

no need for freedom of information requests – it is all available – they spend a ridiculous amount of childrens services and adult social care, yet constantly demand more.
Thank you for your reply …..
I agree with the waste of money, serves to underline the incompetence of the decision makers working for our council.
no problem Pennygreen
The council wade through taxpayers cash like a hot knife through butter – the more they get, the more they waste. They need to cut this waste and the council tax bills, instead of pretending that they do not have enough for frontline services.
The council need to paint or do something to the outside of the council building, its an eyesore, looks dilapidated its almost ironic
Spend this additional money wisely IOW Council, no more off-shore investments, the current funds invested are not bringing the predicted returns! Ensure this money is given to the people and places on our island who really need it.
£92,000 of that can be for the fixed link viability study ASAP solentfreedomtunnel.co.uk
Total waste of time and money and the small amount raised for this so called viabilty study so far is the indicator that only a few want it so stop boring everybody with this.
give it a rest eh ken
Please understand Ken this is boring and going to get you absolutely nothing, nowt, zero, zilch. There is going to be no fixed link It’s an Island and that’s why it’s different.
Do something constructive and start a viability study into a campaign to get a decent company to serve the Island with a reliable Ferry service that serves the interest’s of the long suffering people of this Island. Then I believe you will get support.
I wonder how much will be wasted needlessly taking good parents to court.
Change the record .nobody cares. Getting boring now .
more pay rises for the managements and more money for expenses claims wont be much left for those whom it was meant for.
And the council have just increased our C/tax by 4%
This will pay for emergency services called out for all the car crashes on the island
