The Isle of Wight could soon have another 2 drive-thru restaurants if plans being developed by McDonald’s for both Cowes and Lake come to fruition.
Rumours have been circulating for some time about the potential for a McDonald’s drive-thru at Three Gates Road in Cowes.
Although no formal planning application has yet been submitted, Island Echo has seen plans for the site opposite Rogerson Close.
Initial proposals are that the fast food giant will open its third Isle of Wight restaurant next to BAE Systems and Van Mossel Esplanade, complementing existing stores in Ryde and Newport. The drive-thru would come complete with 25 parking spaces and 2 waiting bays, with enough room to stack 16 cars at once.
It has also emerged that plans are well developed for a drive-thru in Lake, to service The Bay area and neighbouring towns such as Ventnor.
McDonald’s is about to go public with plans for a restaurant at Merrie Gardens on Newport Road, next to KFC. It’s said that this will deliver significant investment and benefits to the local area, including the creation of around 120 full-time and part-time jobs.
It is already known that McDonald’s will be opening a drive-thru at the new St George’s Retail Park in Newport, thought to be opening in Q2 2026. Island Echo first reported on the plans over 5 years ago…
If all 3 plans come off the Isle of Wight will boast 5 McDonald’s restaurants, 4 offering a drive-thru facility.
The news comes days after Burger King was given the green light to open its second Isle of Wight outlet in the form of a drive-thru at Tesco Extra in Ryde.
Oh goodie, more rubbish dumped on our streets and open spaces to be collected by who – not our useless council that’s for sure.
with todays technology, it would take little effort to have each cup, box and bag supplied by fast food outlets such as McDonalds, to have individual bar / QR codes.. then, with a simple scan, they could record these againts the card numer used to pay for it…
in the majority of cases, it would then be easy to link any dumped rubish to the person resonsible,.. & fine them (preferaby directly / automatically on the card used to pay for it)
forget putting all these resourses into AI generated fake videos etc,.. just use a fraction of the tech / power / processing to do a useful job, that makes the world a better place..
What if they paid by cash!!
That’s why I said “in the majority of cases”….
from observation, the majority of people, especially the generation(s) who most use fast food outlets like McDs pay by card (or other digital equivilent).. so for those people they’d have so specifically pay by cash to avoid being traced…
I believe that most of the issue with people dumping this sort of litter, is just plain lazyness,.. they just can’t be arsed to find a bin, or walk a few feet, & take the easy option of just opening their car door / window & dropping it out…
if you make is so that the effort of trying to avoid being caught & fined (e.g. paying by cash, or deliberately removing / obscuring the codes on the wrappers) is more than the effort of finding / using a bin, they’ll be more inclined to take the course of action that requires the least effort…
The other option, would be to legislate to make the FF company liable (and fined) for their logo’d rubbish,.. that would then pust the responsibility of making sure their custmers dispose of the rubbish properly, on to them & any cost of cleaning it up…
Obesity will be on the rise.
Good. A takeaway that’s open when its customers want it to be.
That is true. I just wish they would sort out the
traffic management at Ryde McDonald’s.
When I leave my home in Seaview and drive to Tesco
many times I have to sit in unnesseccary tailbacks
due to all the vehicles entering McDonald’s.
They should move the McDonald’s to a larger premises,
the old ice skating rink would be ideal, plenty of parking
as well.
Big Macs? Been years since I bothered, and these two new McDonald’s on the Island are a terrible idea. A handful of low-wage jobs don’t justify the mess—litter everywhere, drive-thrus jamming up roads, and more obesity, diabetes, and heart issues. This Island is special, not a dumping ground for fast-food sprawl. Every Islander needs to fight these plans, or we’re heading for trouble fast.
A big mac on the mainland is different to a big mac
on the island.
Island numpty’s don’t know how to serve up a big mac.
More fast foods chains and more overweight people
Another way of overwhelming the NHS
Lol
One absolute strict condition within the planning permission if granted is that the outlets must collect the litter. Would only take one staff member five minutes every morning and could be part of the staffing rota.
Also provide plenty of litter bins near the premises just in case customers want to put the wrappings in a bin.
Would be really appreciated if KFC and Burger King in Newport did a letter pick first thing every morning.
Excellent idea, but many Gen Z ers won’t want to do that
task it is below them.
Lol
It’s a well known fact that the higher concentration of fast food outlets are an indicator of social depravation and poverty of an area. It’s an advert…’the poorest of people live here, and this is what they eat’. Those who can afford to eat better elsewhere and wouldn’t be seen dead in a Maccy Ds. There is a judgement.
If I were a tourist, checking in to one of the biggest chain hotels in Lake to be assaulted by the constant smell of fast food would see me check out instantly and demand a refund. Mind you, it’s becoming apparent across the country that those hotels is where the poorest also stay.
If governance and planning don’t have a good hard look at what they’re trying to achieve here, what revenue they want to start bringing in, what message they want to convey, the Isle of Wight will be on a serious downward slope…and so will its poorest inhabitants who also deserve so much better that nutrition free, greasy, addictive fast foods.
Oh my days, I’m so sorry. DEPRIVATION, not depravation!!! Bloody autocorrect!
Boasting about having all those Muckdonalds is not something to boast about.
re the litter, it’s lobbed out of car windows miles away and won’t be picked by anybody.
Use technology to print the registration of each car onto their packaging so that it can be traced, that is if the cars are legally on the road of course, where is the online petition against the planning?
The Numpty’s running the island cannot even STOP
speeding motorists or Numpty’s parking on Pavements
or Double Yellow Lines
SO NO CHANCE OF THAT!
Just look outside Sandown Pier, everyday
rows of Numpty’s parked on the Double Yellow Lines
or on the pavement outside the old tourist information
centre
THE ISLAND IS A JOKE WHEN IT COMES TO RULES!
Brilliant idea.
How lucky will the Broadleigh and Lanesend Primary Pupils be!
All children should be easily able to grab a McMuffin and Coffee on the way to school. It’ll save thousands from the Breakfast Club costs in one fell swoop.
In all seriousness.
I know people ‘hate’ McDonalds, but for many as an occasional treat, or when in a rush at odd hours of the day, they are a godsend.
My worry is the proximity to the Schools.
The Lake store will sail through planning (as will Burger King Westridge) as it is next door to an existing Fast Food Outlet.
However, within 100 metres of the School entrance there will be: –
1 Greasy Spoon Cafe (admittedly a fantastic one)
1 Burger Van
1 Super Market Cafe (Which essentially is fast food for pensioners… it’s not renowned for it’s Salads and Health Shakes)
1 KFC
1 McDonalds
1 Gastro Pub
Which is worth a consideration.
However, perhaps the fault for that is our WONDERFUL Council (both the former and current administrations)
Lake is a great location, on the major junction into the Bay. Plenty of Brown Field Land to build on and provide parking.Parking which is free, Parking which does not attract a silly £2 overnight charge if you’re popping for food for 20 minutes.
Sandown – Would be great to have a Fast Food chain on the high street – But no building is suitable and there is no-where for the carpark.
Imagine if if Retail could replace some of the eyesore crumbling hotels?
Shanklin – Imagine the impact of the extra cars trying to park!
Imagine if they actually engaged in some Town planning over the last 20 years – This could be all in the Towns instead of on the outskirts.
I have often laughed that the easiest job in the world is being a Town Palnner on the Isle of Wight.
Their sole job is to ask “Does this involve building something new? Is it going to look EXACTLY the same as it did in 1972”?
If that is the case. We’ll Block it!
I seem to remember that the IOW council were supporters of a healthy eating culture
Three more MacDonalds seem to be in conflict with this.
I like the idea of printing car reg numbers on packaging. Should be easy with new technology.
And how could it be proved that the occupants of the vehicle dumped it in the street or seagulls pulled it out of the bin?
CCTV would provide the answer.
IW Council don’t do much about the 0 or
1 star filthy establishments.
So I doubt they care about healthy eating.
Lol
Oh good boy racer’s and trash thrown all the place can’t wait..wheels spins doughnuts not the ones you buy..brilliant.
McDonald’s open where they want, the council can do nothing. If the try and stop it, macs will take it to court. They have literally billions behind them. Suck it up.
Bill Gates supplies the fries etc from his vast amount of
Farmland.
Oh Look the IW council supporting more genocide in Palestine.
They should ban all McDonalds and help stop the genocide that Israel is doing.
