Island Line is once again running an hourly service between Ryde and Shanklin this week due to a fault with the second train.
A breakdown has resulted in just 1 train being available for use on the network, resulting in the cancellation of some scheduled services.
Trains will depart from Shanklin at XX:18 and from Ryde Pier Head at XX:49. Disruption is expected to continue until the end of the day on Thursday.
The ageing trains are due to be replaced, but that isn’t expected to happen until at least 2021. It’s unclear how much life the former Underground tube trains have left in them following a series of breakdowns in the past few months.
The service is now at risk of a total suspension of operations if the last remaining trains develops a fault over the next 4 days. Island Echo is told that just a single carriage is being used on the service today.

Judging by the speed we reached between Brading and Sandown a week ago, the drivers do seem to cane the poor old ladies
As I said, tarmac it over, use private shuttle buses. Fast, cheap and easy to drive. Why have the huge expense of electricity highly dangerous steel lines, massive maintenance costs, fencing to keep the idiot children off, when a private track could run battery buses.
Could even turn the train into batter powered and use the lines to charge such but at safe low voltages, if nambees want the ‘look’ of a train still.
Interestingly, Vivarail (who are refitting the replacement trains) are one of the pioneers of feasible battery-powered trains. I wonder why they weren’t chosen for the Island Line as I would have thought it was a good application for them?
This seems normal service now
Turn it into a monorail, one suspended rail and no need to worry about flooding….
