A busy day for the Island’s emergency services has continued into this afternoon (Saturday) with further road traffic collisions at Blackwater near Newport and Bouldnor near Yarmouth.
Just before 13:30 2 vehicles were involved in a rear-end shunt at Blackwater on the main Sandown to Newport road.
This resulted in heavy traffic heading in and out of the county town.
Then, shortly before 14:00, a car left the carriageway and came to rest down an embankment on its side on the main road into Yarmouth.
It’s said that a tree prevented the vehicle from rolling down the hill further and into the sea.
No serious injuries have been reported at either crash.
This afternoon’s incidents come following a spate of road traffic collisions across the Island including at Wilton Park Road in Shanklin, Briddlesford near Wootton, Middle Road at Tapnell, Whitwell Road near Ventnor and Avenue Road in Sandown.

7 vehicle accidents in one day… useless drivers.. they should all be banned from driving for at least 12 months.. plus charged, driving with undue care and attention… and give large fines !!
Pure ignorant road users..
Can you really fine someone for an accident, when some drink drivers don’t get a fine. They get a a driving ban, costs, and a victim surcharge?
You are the one that should be charged with ignorance .
Why? He’s quite right, a lot of drivers drive as normal and not according to the conditions. Frightens the pants off me.
Some People just don’t care anymore I’m afraid if you carried a gun your be put in prison for 5 years .your driving should be careful ,you are responsible .IV seen speed cameras today but they need to focus on bad driving more patrol’s ,it’s not rocket science
I’m surprised there weren’t more, judging by what I witnessed, I was driving on the Brading Downs toward Newport, I could feel the car start to slide, so slowed, I then had an idiot of a Mercades van tail gating me. Then going through Horringford a car over took me in the 40 mile speed limit, I then saw the car weaving all over the road, how it missed the on coming traffic I’ll shall never know.
Van drivers are bloody dangerous, most of them are very aggressive, aways bullying other drivers…
You couldn’t make it up, when are they going to learn…
Please can we have more gritting throughout the cold days?
It won’t make any difference.you just need to look ahead and drive to the conditions
Please can we have more responsible driving throughout the cold days….. and beyond.
The scrap yards must think that christmas has arrived early!
Me me ,,,, you’re right about one thing,, it’s POOR driving NOT SPEEDING. In many cases it’s bad decisions made by drivers confronted by slow bad divers. You wouldn’t of passed your test if you didn’t keep up with the flow of traffic and drive to the conditions and speed of the roads. It’s easy money for the councils / government to make money from speeders while poor drivers are allowed to continue on a downward spiral. I’ve spent many hours behind drivers ( not just on the island )doing between 30 and 40 mph on a 50/60 mph road in good conditions. If you can’t drive with confidence maybe it’s time to start using the BUS.
The apparently disproportionate number of RTAs at Bouldner is interesting. There have been death crashes there I believe, and really frequent single vehicle leaving-the-road incidents. it’s usually on the westward approach to Yarmouth which is a wide, fairly straight high-vis road so never understood why. The big fir tree someone knocked over years ago is a permanent reminder of what happens regularly there!
Hardly surprising was tail gated yesterday from coppins towards ryde once I got to the 40 mph bit they came past like I was standing still.
Why is it people think they can drive as normal in this type of weather?
