The rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine has progressed well across the Isle of Wight, but new figures show that the West Wight is doing particularly well and is considered the top area in the country for vaccinating all residents.
Statistics from the NHS show that an incredible 57.5% of the population in Freshwater and Yarmouth have been vaccinated to date – a total of 5,451 first doses. This number will of course be boosted by the fact that a larger number of elderly residents live in these areas, with all over 64s currently being invited for jabs.
The new figures reveal somewhat of a postcode lottery and a real north/south divide. The worst area in the country is Cathedral & Kelham in Sheffield, where just 3.19% of the population have received their first dose.
Island Echo reported yesterday (Thursday) that 93% of the Island’s over 65s have now received their first vaccine. Overall, 46.6% of the Island’s 16+ population (55,888 people) have now had their first jab – a number that is increasing by around 8,000 a week.
Top 5 areas in England for vaccinating all residents
- Yarmouth & Freshwater, Isle of Wight – 57.46%
- Sidmouth Town, Devon – 57.33%
- Felixstowe East, Suffolk – 54.74%
- Selsey, West Sussex – 53.17%
- Ferring & Kingston Gorse, West Sussex – 52.85%
Nationally, almost 18.7million people have received their first dose with 700,000 second doses administered.

Who cares? Figures all fudged as normal.
This is misleading and sloppy journalism. These percentages represent the proportion of the population given their first jab, not the proportion of eligible people vaccinated. Nothing to do with a North/South divide. Sheffield is only 16.1% older people and this particular ward is the city centre which would be likely an even lower proportion.
Are these figures correct, as there are only 7 people in Freshwater and Yarmouth. Ha Ha. Seriously ,well done everyone involved. All we have got to do now is get everybody else done
Easy when you have more fingers you do more jabs 😉
Very well done to ALL at westwight surgery.shame the rest of the island isn’t as organised!!
Lot easier when there are less population in an area so it is not about being disorganised and also other areas on the Island have had supply issues. But well done to the West Wight.
How about you congratulate their success, you screaming about them having a lower population isn’t going to do anything
“well done to the West Wight” You obviously can not read Joe.
How nice and comforting, I’m sure. I wonder how many people checking in to their hollibobs accommodation in south Wight, just to-day, have had a shot of Oxford’s/Porton Down’s finest elixir? Oh, that’s right, it’s safe over here if you know someone with lots of properties by the sea.
Too many wines I think you have had !!
