A new ‘low-cost’ 1-bedroom flat could be built within a former branch of Barclays Bank in Shanklin.
Mr S. White is seeking a change of use of office space within 53 High Street in Shanklin, a building that has been vacant since November 2017.
His proposed apartment would be ‘attractive to young professionals seeking quality accommodation’, a statement from Phil Salmon Planning Ltd says.
“This scheme represents a major positive opportunity to provide much needed low-cost housing for those that need it in the Bay area.
“The applicant and developer has a successful track record in converting commercial properties into much needed flats.”
He recently converted neighbouring 55 High Street from a restaurant into 4 flats.
The council’s public consultation on application 25/00653/3MAPA ends on 27th June and a decision will be made on 22nd July.

This is a great way of occupying vacant shops that make our high streets look derelict. Clearly there is a lack of business’s that need premises on our high streets. Sandown Council should maybe take this on board too ?
Very true.
Personally I would not fancy living between shops
but things are changing since the pandemic.
Better to be used than empty.
