2 flood alerts have been issued for the Isle of Wight by the Environment Agency this morning (Tuesday) after a month’s worth of rain fell overnight.
Officials say that the water level in the Monktonmead Brook in Ryde is high and rising as, in the last 6 hours or so alone, 50mm of rain has fallen in the area.
Flood water is expected to begin to flow across the railway tracks upstream of St Johns Station. An emergency road closure is already in force on Well Street in Ryde.
A further 10mm of rain is expected over the next 6 hours which will cause more problems, with the river level expected to remain high for several hours.
Meanwhile, a separate alert is in force for the Eastern Yar.
Water levels will become noticeably high at Alverstone this morning, rising near to the top of the river bank. Some minor out of bank flooding may also occur in fields at Langbridge. However, the Environment Agency do not expect access issues at Horringford or significant impacts at Sandown. Property flooding is not currently expected either.
At Alverstone, the river is unlikely to peak until at least 07:00 this morning. Pumps used to protect gardens from flooding may be required to operate, residents are warned.
