UPDATED WITH VIDEO: Firefighters are this evening (Tuesday) battling a roof fire at a bungalow in St Helen’s.
Three appliances from Bembridge, Ryde and Newport are all in attendance on Lower Green Road, where smoke is billowing from the roof space of a detached property.
Crews were called at around 21:10.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are understood to be tackling the fire from inside the building, whilst crews dowse the roof with water from the exterior. The fire is under control at current.
UPDATE @ 21:53 – An aerial hydraulic platform appliance from Ryde Fire Station is now in attendance at the scene as a precaution.
Firefighters have scaled the roof using a long extension ladder to remove tiles.
UPDATE @ 22:22 – The fire has been successfully extinguished, however fire crews remain on the scene damping down any hotspots and ‘making up’ the appliances ready to leave the incident.
The aerial appliance has not been required and has returned to station, however the British Red Cross Fire and Emergency Support vehicle is now at the scene in St Helen’s supporting those affected.
No one has been injured.
UPDATE @ 22:45 – One appliance from Ryde has now returned to station and after talking with the homeowners, volunteers from the British Red Cross have also left the scene.
A tarpaulin has been applied across the roof of the fire damaged home to protect the contents from the elements.
UPDATE WEDNESDAY: Having successfully tackled the fire and prevented it’s spread, firefighters left the scene late last night after making the building watertight. This photograph, taken this morning, shows the damage sustained to the building’s roof.
No other properties were effected.
