Isle of Wight Council tips will be accepting kerbside general waste from Tuesday (15th September) for the first time since March, but in the near future Islanders are going to be asked to stop using black bin bags.
The relaxation is the latest step in the managed re-opening of the Island’s household waste recycling centres at Lynnbottom and Afton Marsh following the easing of lockdown restrictions.
The council has said the booking system will remain in place to maintain effective social distancing to protect staff and visitors. Bookings can be made online at www.iwight.com/hwrcbooking.
Residents are urged to avoid placing hazardous waste such as batteries and household chemicals in their general waste — as this causes damage and fires at the new treatment plant.
In a move that will be sure to anger locals, from November people using the tips will be asked to place their general waste in clear or white sacks so the contents are visible. This does not apply to kerbside collections. It is unclear if this will be a request or a rule.
Natasha Dix, the council’s strategic waste manager, said:
“The Island community has been brilliant during lockdown recycling 27% more at the kerbside and embracing the booking system at the recycling centres.
“We are now reintroducing general waste to the recycling centres to help residents clear any backlog from lockdown clear-outs.“
Councillor Steve Hastings, Cabinet member for waste management, said:
“As an Island we are doing really well with recycling, and thanks to the completion of the new recycling plant at Forest Road, Newport, the council now diverts 98% of general waste from landfill making it one of the top recycling authorities in the country.”

I have to say, that in my experience, the booking system works well for me. Could do with a tweak… like the ability to book two at a time, so long as they are 2 weeks apart…
Yep i agree booking works well …
I haven’t had a problem booking a slot for the day and time of my choice, but I have lots of garden rubbish and would like to go more often and not just at weekends. If everywhere else is open again now why can’t the tips go back to the way they were?
Get a garden waste bin. Worth their weight in gold.
Still wouldn’t be big enough though unfortunately and still need the tip 🙁
So council wants to see my waste because I am not paying, but if I pay a waste carrier they don’t care and goes straight land fill. Do they think we going to put a body in them. Rubbish is what we don’t want or need and pay council tax too.
Excellent to hear that we have reduced our landfill waste to almost zero.
i would also like reassurance that any recyclable waste, like plastic, that goes off island, is not eventually baled and put on ships with the risk to it ending up adding to the pollution of our seas.
Booking system is much better than queuing
Went to Luton and their queue for tip was 3 hours.
