A Ford Fiesta has left the road and come to rest deep in undergrowth off Marshcombe Shute near Brading tonight (Wednesday) – but there are some discrepancies over who was driving.
Shortly before 21:45, the black coloured hatchback left the carriageway whilst heading down the hill towards Yarbridge, narrowly avoiding colliding with a metal fence.
Witnesses tell Island Echo – and have also told the Police – that a young male was driving the vehicle. He was overheard on the phone saying he had ‘just 1 drink’.
However, a middle aged man arriving at the scene with his wife in a Hyundai Kona – after our reporters – has claimed to Island Echo that he was in fact driving, stating he hit mud and left the road.
The same man has called Police to give that account, conflicting with a witness account already given to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary.
The car – visible when travelling towards Yarbridge – has been left in situ.
Police are now in attendance.

Lair lair pants on fire
I think you mean liar liar pants on fire don’t you?
Jail both. Certain to get the right one then.
Island Roads are UNSAFE
ANPR / Speed Camera’s and traffic calming is desperately required Islandwide.
Everyday on the Island there are accidents galore.
If Island roads were unsafe how do so many of us get around without a problem.
It is drunks and drug drivers who are unsafe and a danger to all of us.
Try, people on this island need to learn how to drive safely! Nothing to do with the roads. Way too many motorists drive too fast. Yes, some roads are very narrow, so you slow down, you never know what may be around that blind bend!
Over here, the standard of driving is appalling by many. The Police are now addressing all the problems associated with poor driving, it will take some time as they have a GARGANTUAN task on their hands!
That is the real problem, the police are NOT addressing the problem which is why there are so many drugged and drunk drivers on our roads, they know there is very little chance of being caught. This will remain the case until the police do start to address the problem and the courts start getting tougher on sentencing those that are caught.
Errr Paul, the Police have started to address this problem. They are now using unmarked cars, stopping speeders, taking untaxed, uninsured, no MOT cars off the road, finding many motorists who think it’s ok to drink or drug drive……….if you read the Isle of Wight Police’s posts on Facebook, you have to obviously follow them to have access, you will understand just how successful they have been in only a short time. They have a massive task on their hands, give em time!
Very true, if safety measures were put in place
Accidents would not happen so much.
Everytime I drive along or wait at traffic lights
Look in your mirrors or at oncoming vehicles and it’s amazing how many
persons on using their mobile phones.
ZERO LAW AND ORDER ON THE ISLAND
Plod should drive around in civilian vehicles with plain clothes they would catch
Hundreds of offenders on a daily basis.
They wouod generate so many fines they would not need to keep asking for more
Council tax money from tax payers.
Not the roads that are unsafe Bob, just some cars and lots of drivers.
You proper sausage
Danger on the road.
Should be permanently banned
Mud on road no excuse
If driving to the conditions would not happen
Luck no one else was involved.
Sounds like a dad trying to protect his drunk / drugged driving son! How lucky that only the car is damaged and not an innocent life lost at the expense of this bell-end driver. Who ever is protecting them should be ashamed of themselves!
If true other person should also be charged with perverting the course of justice. If indeed was an older family member, it is clear the apple does not fall far from the tree with a role model like that facilitating one crime to cover up another. Real dregs of society. So glad that car is off the road.
Ban them Both, Simples.
Hopefully this accident shook this young driver up and he has learnt his lesson? SLOW DOWN. I bet he sh*t his pants, hopefully!
One hundred percent that’s what happened!! But unless there is enough evidence to prove otherwise, then nothing can be done.
Perverting the course of justice carries a hefty prison sentence. Jeffrey Archer….
If the reporting is correct, this young man is an idiot, not only has he caused his car to leave the road, he has implicated others with his deceit, whoever arrived later to assist is lying and will also face charges. Good work young man, not only have you endangered others with your driving you have now implicated others to cover for your actions, those aiding you will also gain penalties for deceit. I hope you are all proud of yourselves.
What lovely people.
Kev where is Bev
She out with Bev who also dated dev
Here we go yet again, Island Echo allowing more than one registered user of this comment section to use the same name, this stupidity running through Island Echo is now fuelled by ” Kev “, but it IS NOT ME. Childish Kev,Bev etc, clearly unpopular with number of thumbs down is going unchecked.
I am not responsible for this stupidity and it should not be happening.
Kev where is Bev is she with dev
One problem it’s the Isle of Wight police so they will probably believe the story too save investigating it
Gotta maintain dat case clearance
would you really leave the scene if you only had one drink?
What’s more strange is the police turned up being no one was injured and car wasn’t blocking road, they must of changed there policy, under the heading of ‘How to do the job’
Nothing will come of it. Island police have lowest prosecution rate in the country due to lack of resources. They won’t prosecute without a very good chance of success, which pretty much amounts to a full confession.
A quick fingerprint check of the steering wheel and if dad’s dabs not there arrest them both and throw the book at them.
And possibly check the phone records of both parties.
They will just say that they share usage of the car. Obviously
As I wrote in my post, if the father’s fingerprints are not there, he wasn’t driving the car. Simple enough to check but our police probably won’t bother.
Thank God for the island’s own armchair detective branch, it’s not like the police are highly trained etc.
If police can be bothered to investigate then this young man will get at least a ban , the older fella could be looking at a prison sentence, perverting course of justice is the greater offence. If you crashed car the lad only had to phone police and say so and I got no injuries and will sort with Insurance and land owner in morning, chances are 95% they would of given a ref number and said” thanks for letting us know”
When stories conflict someone is lying. If the police want to take it further when they see this they know someone did something wrong and will not let go. In this case they probably thought, no one was hurt, not got time to deal with this now, let it go. If we had the police that we had before the Tories started to slash the force it would have been followed up.
Chav car ends up in an “accident”
Doesn’t take Poirot now, does it?
I blame the old driver, he even admitted his guilt.
Time to hang up them driving gloves imo.
Ps. Good reporting IE.
Don’t they have any news stories in Burley? Despite allegedly moving away from the Island you still seem surprisingly eager to find out information and adversely comment on a place you no longer reside in. Seems like an unhealthy love hate/abusive relationship you are in?
>>>/d/
That just about sums up your command of the English language!
Probably best for you to concentrate on all things Burley from now on.
In my opinion the guy who posted this story needs to follow up as we wanna know what happened
