Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is currently in attendance at a large field fire in Ryde this afternoon (Monday).
At around 15:40 this afternoon smoke began to issue from a field behind Great Preston Road.
Large plumes of smoke can now be seen, with the blaze noticed by people on the other side of the Solent in Portsmouth.
2 appliances from the nearby Ryde Fire Station are at the scene adjacent to Nicholson Road.
UPDATE @ 16:09 – Further resources have been drafted in as the wind pushes the flames closer to the industrial estate, which is currently smoke logged with ash falling.
UPDATE @ 16:22 – Firefighters are beginning to get ahold of the blaze which has destroyed a large area of open grassland.
Appliances from Ryde, Newport and Shanklin are now on scene with a water carrier from Ventnor also mobilised.
Southern Vectis Route 2 buses are not able to serve Great Preston Road at this time.
UPDATE @ 16;34 – Main jets are now being used to damp down the vast area after a good stop to the fire, which was close to threatening nearby commercial properties.
This aerial photograph, captured by Island Echo, reveals just how close the 100m x 100m blaze came to the industrial estate.
The incident is now being scaled back.

Waiting for the usual bigots to blame the kids when in most cases it’s adults.
Hot off the press lol Fire is now almost under control. Well done to our fire brigade.
Just driven past this and was most surprised to see 2 firemen directing traffic whilst 2 police officers stood on the pavement watching
Yes I noticed that also.
That’s about right.
You don’t know how resources are utilised during any incident and also you were driving past, so you viewed the incident for a few seconds, why comment, negatively, when you have no idea of the situation as a whole?
Actually I viewed the incident for about 3 minutes as the firemen stopped me to allow traffic from the other direction through. And someone else also commented saying the same thing so unless they was waiting behind me I would say the firemen directed the traffic for some time.
yes i think its called rubbernecking
Police didn’t do anything but watch the whole time ,so don’t know why they were there
Easy couple of hours work stood round doing nothing in the sunshine getting paid
Thanks to the fire brigade for getting on this and extinguishing it so quickly. Yes I know it’s close to the Ryde station but others came from all over.
Bet those watering cans were heavy! Lol wait for it… ( it’s a joke before you all fire at me) Glad nobody hurt.
Fire at you. Boom boom
Has anyone noticed that despite fires right left and centre, the fire brigade aren’t whinging that they cannot cope? Unlike some other glorified unnamed emergency service…
Correct well said good job they didn’t take the same approach as GP’s and hide away
Its all that sleep they get, better pay and the ability to strike.
Isn’t Ryde Fire Station just manned in hours of daylight though? always best to get your facts correct before making yourself look stupid I’d say
Yes. Newport is the only fully manned fire station. Ryde is manned daytime only and the rest are all manned by retained firefighters.
Hopefully they will ctach those responsible and not just slap their hands…
It is not arson, doesn’t exist here. I’m surprised Councillor Jordon didn’t turn up to check out if the area was too damaged to build on, oh, but he would rather park illegally on a drop kerbed crossing thereby causing an elderly man to fall, and then when told to move his massive vehicle, he would face up, swear at and abuse a Ventnor resident who asked him to move it, apparently there is no complaints procedure against councillors. Yep it’s true.
could have been bob cooking another sausage.
it was some bright spark that started it.
