Every family that has a child at Oakfield CE Primary School in Ryde received a £50 supermarket gift card earlier this week.
The school on Appley Lane, applied for a grant that was issued as part of the Household Support Fund that was introduced earlier this year to help families with the cost of living crisis this winter.
Parents were informed via email on Friday that the application for the special grant was successful – but they didn’t even know the school had applied in the first place.
On the same day, the gift card was distributed to all parents/carers who were then able to choose at which of the major supermarkets they wanted to redeem the voucher in.
The school hope that the extra financial help would allow everyone to keep healthy and warm this winter.
One parent told Island Echo:
“As you can imagine, this will greatly help many families in these times at this time of year.
“We are all so grateful”.

Why every family?, Why would those that drive up in their Tesla or Range Rover need ?. £50 for many low paid working families would go a long way this Xmas, hopefully those that don’t need will donate back to a more needy family. Well done to Oakfield for forward thinking and getting this, how come other schools or council didn’t apply?.
I guess those who are better off ‘could’ give their supermarket vouchers to the more needy?
It does seem a little excessive to hand out £50 vouchers to everyone though, but how do you judge whether a person or family needs a little help? Certainly not by only giving to those receiving free school meals or using foodbanks etc as both are open to abuse, so I suppose it’s either everyone or no-one.
But, at the end of the day, it’s public money being given away and, just on a personal level, there’s a few I’ve met at Oakfield who I wouldn’t give a penny to, never mind £50. There’s some not very nice individuals who send their children there.
A nice little present for the families, I just hope they use the vouchers wisely.
How is free School meals open to abuse?
This is totally unfair as these people aren’t the only ones struggling
Totally agree what about other schools kids at college favouritism I feel
IMO The good people of Oakfield deserve every penny, just for the fact of living in such a s**t hole.
Makes Pan look posh.
Wah wah wah. Jesus. Life isn’t fair, suck it up and stop feeling sorry for yourself.
What the children need is love from both parents yet rare to get it from one in many cases.
Sadly can’t get vouchers for love, care, and attention, so they ‘think’ more money is the way to a child’s heart. Never seeing that their oft one night stand, single parent with step parent makes them grow up vile to continue providing more unloved feral trash for the next generation to fund.
Need to have contraception in the water supply in such areas.
It may be a cost of living crisis for some, however, there are plenty of people, where this is a “failure to plan crisis” – they have lived beyond their means or borrowed too much money at lower rates of interest, failing to think that rates could go up and are now in a position whereby the money coming in isn’t enough to service the debt and buy groceries. That is their fault and a lack of planning.
The state and taxpayer should not be expected to back stop their poor decision making and the taxpayer should not be paying the bills of those that are too lazy to get a job.
it is this sort of frittering away of taxpayer money, which has resulted in the rest of us paying more taxes.
A very biast view putting all in this negative category maybe you should widen your mind to other sorts of situations rather than berating people for your own pleasure circumstances r all individual
Well said. Something just to help and promote the school and the keyboard warriors start.
Well done to the school, what a lovely idea. And I hope it helps those that really need it. But perhaps sometimes people should consider the cost of having children before having them and expecting the tax payer to fund them. Children aren’t just for Christmas.
I’m sure all the money will be spent on healthy food for the children!
You hypocritical fools. You can’t see that the school is just trying to help people, whether extremely poor, comfortable. It’s just a kind gesture and that everyone is treated equal. Why not thank the school, congrarulate them as for a few this means a little extra good for xmas… all i say is You lot are scum and I wish you the worst of xmas.
Oakfield imo has more than most areas of spongers, criminals, dealers, swindlers, violence and scattered children most benefit kept hence the ‘squeakiest wheel gets the most oil’ is true.
But it should be the ‘squeakiest wheel is removed for good’.
Most of this will be blown on alcohol and dope as truly many vile beings reside their.
Would rather the money was spent on animals, at least they are too ignorant to know not to breed if they are in hard times and don’t expect others to support their one night of fun, forever more.
You are pathetic and I wish you the worst xmas and curse you. You pompous fool.
James, the truth is a little painful…..isn’t it?
Mate… even if your opinions were 100% true, you shouldn’t generalise like that. You highlight your lack of intelligence, let alone empathy. It’s not cool. And clearly your opinion isn’t 100% true, less reason to type the way you do.
Maybe all the other schools should have used the initiative shown here by this school to help their pupils too !! Well done to this schools switched on staff.
Great news
Well deserved
And this is why our economy is in such a mess , the dole dossing spongers (except those with GENUINE disabilities) know that they can benefit every grant, food bank and low income scheme going to survive , come on let’s be honest look at the amount of dole dossers who plead poverty whilst puffing in a cigarette! I am sick to death of people who drive a Tesla, RR or even just a semi decent car being judged as rich and not in need ! These individuals have got off their a*s each day and worked hard to get what they have and it’s better than many of the low life dole dossers who claim poverty yet breed and knocking out more chavs, they are the awarded a bigger newer home and you can be sure they will have the new 70” tv on the wall.
Darren, you are spot on, yet of course those in receipt of such an easy free ride will never admit such, for they obviously want to perpetuate the myth of their in ‘poverty’ to gain more.
Sadly the BBC and others large organisations who ‘don’t know’ benefit scroungers, hear ONLY what they wish to hear to give a ‘sob story’ news article for maximum attention.
So the naive public who live away, or don’t know just how many and how much these crafty but fully ‘informed’ of their rights claim.
They are often into claiming single parent when most are not, claim for a disability, usually a mental health issue, as hard to check, usually have plenty of children to max out universal credit or tax credits, many ‘grow and deal’
