The main road through the village of Alverstone has been closed by Southern Water whilst repairs are undertaken to a burst sewage pipe.
Southern Water says they are currently carrying out emergency repairs to a burst rising main near to the River Yar, with the incident reported to the Environment Agency.
Alverstone Shute has been closed in both directions to allow for the tankering activity needed to divert the flow while the repair is completed. The tankers will ensure customers can continue to use their kitchen and bathroom facilities normally, while also protecting against internal flooding to properties.
The utility company’s priority focus is on completing the repair works and minimising the impact on the environment. No pollution is acceptable, says Southern Water, who will be working with the EA and the local authority to minimise the disruption to customers and harm to the environment.
A spokesperson has said:
“We are working hard to complete the repair on the main and reopen the road as soon as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience this essential road closure may cause”.

At least the residents there have no odour from their dooings.
